Sunday reco: The Great Shamsuddin Family on @JioHotstar . A warm, poignant look at the lives and dilemmas of a middle class Muslim family, free from the stereotypes and pretentiousness of the times. A fine cast of actors headlined by the remarkable Farida Jalal, unarguably one of our finest actors. The dialogues could have been less stilted at times but that’s a minor quibble for a film that offers hope in the Dhurandhar times we live in that quality cinema doesn’t have to be loud and in your face to make an impact. Take a bow Anusha Rizvi whose last directorial venture was the equally effective Peepli Live 👍👍👍⭐️

In the film the Great Shamsuddin Family, the protagonist Bani Ahmed’s resolution arrives with these lines. They assign things back to where they belong: the bird to the rose, the rose to the garden. Nothing is argued for. The heart’s buds can bloom only here. This soil isn’t perfect, but it’s the only one she has risen from, and the only one she will return to. That symmetry consoles her. Life will go on in this garden, imperfectly tended, occasionally bruised, but the garden is her cherished home.
Those lines do not plead history or injury. Belonging, they seem to suggest, isn’t granted by the garden. It’s enacted by those who stay.
