Tesco has suspended one of its workers after they refused to handle goods made in Israel, sparking protests by trade unionists and pro-Palestine activists, plus a petition against the supermarket chain.

Protesters waved Palestine flags and chanted “shame on Tesco” outside one of its branches in the town of Newcastle in Northern Ireland on Monday 21 November.

The unnamed worker was suspended pending a disciplinary “for refusing to handle blood-soaked Israeli goods”, BDS Belfast said in a statement.

“This worker declined to follow the unconscionable demand to check out these tainted items, and now faces disciplinary action for having a conscience and not supporting genocide,” it added.

More than 2,000 people have signed a https://t.co/O71Vz7oTdh petition calling on the supermarket giant to end the disciplinary action against the worker and stop selling Israeli goods.

“It is time for Tesco to stop stocking Israeli products,” the petition says. “When Russia invaded Ukraine, Tesco removed all Russian goods from the shelves.”

UK imports of Israeli goods have fallen by £20m over the past year, down from £121m in 2024 – with couscous, carrots and avocados being among the products that saw the biggest declines.

Co-op said in June that it would no longer stock Israeli products because of “internationally recognised community-wide human rights abuses and violations of international law”.

Israel's genocidal war on Gaza has killed at least 69,785 Palestinians and wounded 170,965 since October 2023.
