Nubank is circling Monzo. Nik Storonsky would rather build the app and buy a small bank.

Nubank has held talks to acquire Monzo. Price talks are £8bn–£10bn, in cash and shares. Monzo’s board is also looking at a funding round above £8bn for Europe, or selling a slice to PE.

Nik Storonsky's line is the opposite.

"We always do an analysis and end up discovering that it's cheaper for us to build internally than to buy. And in many cases, it's also cheaper to acquire customers directly with our product than to buy a platform with many users and then try to migrate them to Revolut.”

They track the companies and all the main rivals. How that tracking works is not public yet. The tech stack similar to QuantumLight's is my guess.

What they do want to buy is licences.

“In some markets, it's faster to buy a licence because in other countries the process is very lengthy. Some even prevent you from obtaining a licence unless you acquire a bank. Turkey is one example. They no longer grant licences there because they want to consolidate the banking industry. And as a new player, you're required to acquire a bank,” Nik said.

Argentina is the first one that actually moved for Revolut. BCRA just approved the acquisition of Banco Cetelem. About $6.4m of assets. They want the charter, not the old customer book.

Turkey has been the same idea around FUPS. Rumours of talks for now, not much else.

Nik still talks about 100 countries as a long-term target. Revolut is in about 40, with 80m customers. I think the 2025 “30 by 2030” line will be met only if the focus is on acquisition, and it seems they are.

Cetelem looks like the first of several of those 50-ish to come.

Nubank may pay for a UK and EU licence plus 16 million customers. Revolut would rather spend the money on its own product and a tiny bank that already has the licence.

Two different approaches. Let's see which one is better.
