Boko Haram Fighter Surrenders with AK-47, 26 Rounds in Borno

A 23-year-old suspected Boko Haram fighter, identified as Ali Saidiq, has surrendered to troops in Borno State with an AK-47 rifle and 26 rounds of ammunition, as sustained military pressure continues to weaken terrorist networks in the Lake Chad region.

Saidiq, a native of Garere in Kukawa Local Government Area of Borno State, surrendered at about 4:45 p.m. on August 20 during a stop-and-search operation conducted by troops of 196 Amphibious Battalion and the Nigerian Army Brigade Lake Chad at Kwatan Alkama checkpoint.

According to sources the suspect voluntarily surrendered one AK-47 rifle, with registration number 02657, and one magazine loaded with 26 rounds of 7.62x39mm ammunition.

Preliminary investigation indicated that Saidiq decided to surrender following sustained military pressure against terrorist elements in the area and after losing interest in continuing with terrorist activities.

Security sources said his surrender represents another indication of the impact of intensified military operations on the operational capacity and morale of terrorist fighters operating in the Lake Chad axis.

The suspect is currently in military custody for profiling and further investigation to establish his role within the terrorist group, his operational history and possible links to other members of the network.

The development comes amid continued efforts by Nigerian troops to deny terrorist groups freedom of movement, disrupt their logistics and encourage fighters who are willing to abandon terrorism to surrender.

The military has continued to combine offensive operations with intelligence-led security measures, including stop-and-search activities, aimed at intercepting terrorists and recovering weapons before they can be used against troops or civilians.

The surrendered rifle and ammunition have been secured as part of the ongoing investigation.

Nigeria’s reform scorecard provides a useful basis for assessing the gains, costs and unfinished work arising from the current policy programme. ₦200 million can change an entire family’s future. That is exactly why protecting it should come before trying to multiply it.

The problem was not poultry or piggery. Both can be profitable. The problem was putting the entire windfall into one sector and exposing every naira to the same risks.

Keep most of the money temporarily in Treasury bills, government bonds or a regulated money market fund. Use a smaller amount to test the business. Track the costs, sales and actual profit for a few production cycles. If the numbers hold up, add more capital gradually.

Fixed income is lower risk, not risk-free. But it gives you time to think, plan properly and avoid one decision wiping out everything.

When life-changing money enters your hands, your first job is not to double it. Your first job is to make sure you never return to zero.

In 2023, two regions alone accounted for nearly 80% of all election violence victims in Nigeria.

Taking out these two regions would see Nigeria's total election violence victims drop massively from 401 to just 85.

This underscores that election violence was not evenly distributed across the country, but heavily localized in just two geopolitical zones.

PUBLIC ADVISORY: MANDATORY LABELLING OF MANUFACTURED GOODS FOR CONSUMER INFORMATION

Pursuant to Sections 17(p),(w),(x), 114, 116, 123 and 125 of the
Federal Competition and Consumer Protection Act (FCCPA), 2018

Wednesday, August 19, 2026: The Federal Competition and Consumer Protection Commission (FCCPC) has observed with serious concern the increasing circulation, distribution, and sale of consumer goods that do not comply with prevailing standards and regulations governing product labelling.

Market surveillance, routine inspections, and quality assurance activities have revealed products bearing misleading or deceptive information, as well as products without production dates, expiry or best-before dates, batch numbers, manufacturer details, ingredient lists, allergen information, country of origin, and other mandatory labelling information.

As empowered by the Act, the Commission is mandated to promote consumer safety by ensuring strict adherence to labelling requirements in line with applicable standards set by competent regulatory authorities, including the Standards Organisation of Nigeria (SON), the National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC), among others.`

Deceptive, incomplete, or misleading product labelling violates consumers’ right to the information required to make informed purchasing decisions and may expose them to significant health, safety, and economic risks.

Accordingly, the Commission directs all manufacturers, importers, distributors, and retailers to immediately review their inventories and withdraw from sale any consumer goods that do not comply with applicable labelling requirements. Businesses that continue to distribute or sell non-compliant products risk appropriate regulatory enforcement action.

In light of the foregoing, consumers are advised to carefully examine product labels before purchase and avoid products with missing, illegible, altered, misrepresented, or poor-quality labels, as well as those bearing false claims or misleading information. Suspected cases of non-compliance should be reported promptly through the Commission’s official complaint channels

The FCCPC will continue to strengthen nationwide market surveillance and enforcement activities in collaboration with relevant regulatory authorities to ensure compliance and enhance consumer protection.
