Google's September spam update finished rolling out yesterday β it took 2 weeks, way longer than this year's earlier spam updates. If your store's Google traffic dipped since Sept 24, this could be why. Check Search Console vs early September, then audit thin pages first.
"How to clean stainless steel" vs "stainless steel cookware set for sale." Same store, totally different shoppers. The first is researching. The second has a credit card. Point your buying pages at the second kind.
Shoppers now ask ChatGPT what to buy, not Google. ChatGPT reads your text, not your photos β it recommends products from detailed descriptions: material, color, size. Vague page = invisible. New shelf, same rule: be findable.
Google now lets US stores add a buy button inside AI search answers (AI Mode, Gemini) β shoppers can check out right there or land on your site. AI shoppers are a new sales channel. Stores with complete, accurate product data win it.
If your product description is the manufacturer's text, it's on 50 other stores too. Google picks one to rank β usually not yours. Rewrite your top 20 sellers in your own words first. Highest ROI writing you'll do.
An SEO agency deleted a store's collection pages. Organic traffic crashed β right before Christmas, their biggest season. The fix? They put the pages back and traffic recovered. Never delete a page that earns traffic. Redirect it.
Store owners: when Google sends you a visitor, where do they usually land β your homepage, a blog post, or a product page? The answer tells you a lot about whether your traffic can actually buy.
Google ran a spam update last week. The losers: stores with thousands of thin pages β duplicate variants, filter copies, auto-generated descriptions. Fewer, better pages beat thousands of thin ones. Audit yours this week.
Store owners running Google ads: from Oct 12, Google auto-pulls coupons and deals off your site into your ads β unless you opt out. An old expired deal could end up advertised. Check what promos your site shows, or turn it off in ad settings. (via https://t.co/OCrByLbFwm)
A store with 2,000 products had 180,000 pages in Google β mostly filter copies.
Google crawled copies instead of products.
Fix: tell Google to ignore filter combos. Filters stay for shoppers; copies hide from Google.
Spend Google's limited time on pages that sell.
Google is testing how many products fit in one search row: 3, 4, or 5. Fewer tiles means bigger product photos but fewer stores shown. Keep your product titles clear and your photos sharp β in a 3-tile grid, you only get one glance to win the click.
"Do reviews actually help my store rank?"
Yes β twice.
Shoppers trust stores with reviews (more sales), and every review is fresh, unique content Google can read.
Ask every buyer. Make it one click.
That discontinued product page still getting Google traffic?
Don't delete it. Point it to the closest live product or its category.
Deleting throws away every link and ranking it earned. A redirect keeps that value working for you.
Dead pages should still make you money.
Google's spam update is still rolling out β a second wave of ranking shifts hit around Sep 30. If your store traffic wobbled, don't panic yet. What's getting hit hardest: thin, templated pages. So check your auto-generated category pages and give them real, useful detail.
What most SEO agencies won't tell store owners:
1. Nobody can promise rankings
2. Months 1-2 are audits and fixes, not miracles
3. If they won't show WHAT they changed, be suspicious
4. "Secret strategy" = "we'll figure it out"
Ask for the work log, not the pretty report.
Slow stores don't rank β and don't sell.
The usual culprits:
- Product photos straight from the camera (5MB each)
- 20 apps you never use, all loading on every page
- A video banner playing before the products
Compress images, kill dead apps. Speed lifts rankings AND sales.
Google just changed its AI content guidance: it now says itβs "critical" to manually check AI-generated content before publishing β including your product titles, descriptions, and image alt text. If your catalog is auto-written, have a human spot-check it weekly.
Quick game, store owners:
A store sells 500 products. Google has indexed thousands of its pages β but most are near-identical copies made by color/size/price filters.
Real products are buried under the copies.
What's the FIRST thing you'd fix? One line of reasoning.
Nobody Googles your store's name.
They Google "buy wireless headphones under $50." If you don't have a page for what buyers actually type, you're invisible to everyone who never heard of you.
Check: search your top 3 products like a stranger would.
Google is testing a wider product grid in search β 3 to 5 products per row instead of fewer.
More of your competitors now appear side by side with you.
If your title, price, and photo don't win the thumbnail, you never get the click.
