K9 HANDLER CONVICTED: 15 Days Behind Bars for Death of Police K9

The brief: 1 active K9. 1 retired K9. One barely survived. Then? 2 felonies dropped to 2 misdemeanors. Two years of probation. Just 15 days in jail.

Dexter, Missouri - K-9 Apollo was a police dog with the Dexter Police Department in Missouri. His handler, Officer Derrick A. Durall, was responsible for feeding him, watering him, and keeping him alive. The department even provided the food. Between September 2023 and February 2024, according to court documents, Durall failed to do any of it.

On February 18th, 2024, Apollo was found dead in his kennel at Durall's home. A veterinary exam found he had lost approximately 25 pounds since his last checkup five months earlier. That’s nearly 40 percent of his body weight. He weighed a little more than 40 pounds. The vet described decreased muscle mass and sunken eyes from malnutrition and dehydration. Tests also found pneumonia, which the vet said was common in malnourished dogs and was likely the final event that led to Apollo's death.

Apollo was not the only dog in Durall's care. Retired K9 Knox, who had served the department before Apollo arrived, was kept in a separate kennel at the same home. When investigators evaluated Knox, they found severe heartworms, severely worn teeth, and a dog who had lost about 10 pounds since his last vet visit in October 2022. He was described as generally unkempt. Knox survived, but barely.

The Dexter Board of Aldermen voted to terminate Durall's employment on April 1st, 2024. Police Chief Hank Trout said an internal investigation found Durall had violated department policies and was responsible for Apollo's death and Knox's neglect. The Missouri State Highway Patrol conducted the criminal investigation.

Durall was initially charged with two counts of felony animal abuse and two counts of misdemeanor animal neglect. The felony charges alleged he purposely caused injury and suffering, specifically severe dehydration and starvation, and that the suffering was the result of torture consciously inflicted while the animals were alive.

Then just the other day on August 24th, 2026, Durall pleaded guilty to two counts of misdemeanor animal abuse. The felony charges were gone. He was sentenced to one year in the Dunklin County Jail but the judge suspended the sentence, giving him two years of supervised probation and just 15 days in jail. He was also ordered to pay the city of Dexter $8,900 in restitution for Apollo's death.

Bottom Line? Fifteen days. That’s what the starvation death of K9 Apollo was worth in a Missouri courtroom.

Apollo lost nearly 40 percent of his body weight while his handler's own police department provided the food that went uneaten. Knox, a retired dog who had given his working life to the department, was left with heartworms and worn teeth in the kennel next door.

K-9 Apollo deserved better. K-9 Knox deserved better. And the community that trusted this officer with two lives deserved a sentence that reflected what was done to them.

The dog, Apollo, lost nearly 40% of his body weight, his ribs and spine were poking through his skin, and he passed away from "terminal starvation and dehydration" in a kennel in the officer's backyard.

His punishment? FIFTEEN DAYS in jail.

His name is Derrick Durall. He was the K9 handler for the Dexter Police Department in Missouri.

His partner was Apollo, a Belgian Malinois the department bought in April 2023.

In September 2023, a veterinarian examined Apollo. Her words, in the court record: a "perfectly healthy police dog." 67 pounds. Body condition: "perfect."

Five months later, on February 18, 2024, Apollo was found de*d in his kennel outside Durall's house.

He weighed 41 pounds.

Twenty-five pounds, GONE. His muscles wasted away. His eyes sunken into his skull. The state trooper's photos show his ribs and vertebrae protruding through his skin.

The necropsy: "terminal starvation and dehydration."

The police department PROVIDED the dog food, for free. It was sitting right there.

He just... didn't feed him.

When investigators asked, Durall claimed he "had not noticed the health decline" of his own partner.

A dog that lost nearly 40% of its body weight, in his own backyard.

It gets worse. There was a SECOND dog.

Retired K9 Knox lived in the kennel next to Apollo.

When they found him, he had severe heartworms, teeth worn down, and he had lost 10 pounds and had not seen a vet in over a YEAR.

Investigators said he smelled so bad the stench wouldn't come off after washing him FIVE times.

Now here's where I need you to pay attention, because this is the accountability part.

Prosecutors charged him with TWO FELONIES for animal abuse, alleging the suffering was "torture, consciously inflicted."

A jury trial was set for this summer.

And then, last week, it all evaporated.

He was allowed to plead guilty to two MISDEMEANORS. T
he felonies vanished and a judge sentenced him to one year in jail... and then SUSPENDED it.

Fifteen days. Two years probation. $8,900 to the city.

That's it.

It gets worse.

Missouri has a law called Max's Law.

If YOU, a regular citizen, knowingly m*rder a police K9, it's a Class D felony with up to SEVEN YEARS in prison.

Attack a police dog and you could do seven years.

Starve one to de*th in your backyard while wearing the badge... fifteen days.

Apollo couldn't open the food bag.
He couldn't turn on a faucet.
He couldn't call a vet.

He was completely dependent on the one man sworn to take care of him.

And that man let him waste away to 41 pounds and starve in the cold.
