The difference between becoming just 'good' at something and 'amazing' at something is how long you're willing to feel like you're garbage at it. Always extending to what you can't do doesn't feel nice.
Hey @LynAldenContact, loved Broken Money. Quick Q - if networks naturally drift toward power law concentration, what stops BTC from locking in early adopters as a permanent elite, while theft victims + latecomers are left on the losing end? Same hierarchy, just a new system?
2020s internet is like a very echo-y canyon now.
> Someone says something great
> People parrot and repeat over and over again
> You can hear the echo of some things for years as an idea reverberates
Not good or bad, just an observation...
“Time doesn’t compound. It shrinks.” 👏
Think about the last year and how quickly it went.
If you’re of a similar vintage to me, you’ve probably noticed that every year seems to pass faster than the last.
If you’re 50, you’ve got maybe ~30 of these annual reflections, 30 of these shrinking chunks of time left.
It doesn’t take long to count to 30.
And that’s it. Game over.
If you live “normally,” a meaningful chunk of those years will be spent with reduced capacity, energy, and freedom, which leaves maybe 15–20 truly good years.
I don’t write this to depress you, but to make two things crystal clear:
1/ As the end approaches, each remaining good year becomes incredibly valuable. Protect them. Invest in your health and fitness.
2/ Time accelerates. The years ahead will pass faster than the ones behind...
Whatever you want to do.
Whatever you want to feel.
Whatever you want to experience or build.
The time is now.
AI coding has crossed the chasm. The 'engineer' role is walking around rn but it's dead in a single digit years. Learn how to figure out WHAT and WHY to build something and design/product sense, not just the HOW. Or you're obsolete... a horse & cart in a post-automobile world.
@justinskycak Opportunity cost still exists though - infinite problems and finite time. Taking that ‘best’ possible approach is only possible if the groundwork is laid to solely focus on that one problem. Otherwise you need to do the thought experiment considering all priorities.
Are we just living in a state of modern communism that caught us inch by inch without realising?
- 1 of 5 working age UK adults out of work and not looking
- sky high taxes
- 45% of GDP is public services
- subsidy-driven industries
When does social democracy become communism?
@justinskycak Interestingly, that spaced repetition graph might well demonstrate all aspects of human adaptation (physical/cognitive/both). Weights, math, language learning, riding a bike, running, chess, gymastics, etc. It’s all just a layered SR graph of many skills forcing adaptation.
There’s 66 days left of 2025.
66 days average is what many studies point for solidifying real habit change (w caveats ofc).
Start today and you can have a new habit solidified for going into 2026.
I’ll be trying to fix my sleep latency for real this time…
