2 June marks the birthdays of both Mani Ratnam and maestro Ilaiyaraaja. Today, we revisit the films and songs from their decade-long collaboration, from Mouna Ragam and Nayakan to Thalapathi, that helped shape modern Indian cinema 🎬🎶

A thread 🧵:
Golden blossoms of the Amaltas tree, seen inside New Delhi's Crafts Museum complex.
Standing under this tree feels like being encompassed by a dome of soft, golden light.
Neeve gani verevaru leru
నీవే గాని వేరెవరు లేరు.
Only you, I have no one else.
Naa jeevadhara, Sankara Gangadhara
నా జీవాధార, శంకర గంగాధర
The fount my life, O Shankara, bearer of the Ganga.

Shelter me, this hour, Oh! Connoisseur of the Cosmic Dance.
Nee vaada, Mahadeva, Shiva Shambhava
నీవాడ, మహాదేవ శివ శంభో!

actually Bangalore lost its cool no matter what the weather folks say...
The daytime max barely moved since the 1980s. But it's hotter than 30C for MUCH longer
Heat stress lasts longer: used to get cooler by 4:27 PM → now HOT till 5:54 PM
The night used to cool down below 22°C and we used to recover — now hours per night under 22°C — shrank from 3½ hours to 48 minutes!
No wonder I'm cranky and exhausted in the mornings!

This happens at noon every day - the Fig tree and Mulberry tree are fruiting. Our Avian friends are throwing all caution to the wind and engaging in a raucous feast! Delhi is having a rather blessed spring this year.
The babblers(Common?/Jungle?) are enjoying the sun today.Lying in the grass and spreading their feathers to rid themselves of germs and bugs. Salim Ali’s book ‘Common Birds’ calls them ‘Seven Sisters’/Saat Bhai(brother!). Here six of them are acting like Europeans on a beach. 1/3
In a manner of few minutes, the master mimic of all birds - the Common Mynah went catatonic at the exact same spot. It didn’t flinch even when it’s mate disturbed him! 2/3
A family in our neighbourhood moved out and perhaps forgot to carry their amaryllis bulbs. They lay abandoned under the shade of a false Asoka tree. I rescued them and now they adorn my front yard. We are grateful for each other.
This is a reimagination of the veena parts I played in "Phir Se", a song from the movie Dhurandhar - The Revenge.

Ode to the missing petal:
Your absence has gone through me,
Like thread through a needle.
Everything I do is stitched with its colour.
