A 41-year-old Ethiopian migrant attacked a 14-year-old boy at Germany’s Freiburg Central Station, punching him in the face and sending him crashing head-first into a stone step before trying to gouge out his eye while shouting, “I’ll kill you!” The suspect, who was carrying a carpet knife and pepper spray, has since been released.

The teenager, Leon, was waiting for his father ahead of a fishing trip when the attack occurred. An Italian café owner saw what was happening and overpowered the attacker.

Leon was hospitalized with a bruised jaw, dizziness, nausea, and eye injuries. His father says he has been severely traumatized, is receiving psychiatric treatment, wakes up screaming at night and no longer wants to travel by train.

The Ethiopian suspect told police he had mistaken Leon for somebody else.
