Minister Dr. Abdulla Muththalib and H.E. Ambassador Kong Xianhua, Chinese Ambassador to the Maldives, visited the Male’ and Vilimale’ Road Redevelopment Project site today, where survey works for the detailed road design are currently underway under China Aid.
Ministry, in partnership with UNDP Maldives and CDRI, officially launched the nationwide “Viluntheri Binaaru” programme to strengthen resilient infrastructure and risk-informed local planning across the Maldives.
This nationwide initiative will empower local councils officers with the knowledge, tools, and methodologies needed to integrate climate and disaster risk considerations into infrastructure planning and development. As island communities face increasing challenges from coastal flooding, erosion, storm surges, and extreme weather events, strengthening local capacity is critical to ensuring safer, more sustainable, and resilient development.
The results offer an encouraging message. The majority of those living in Hithadhoo voted for PNC, placing their trust in the party, while the majority of Hithadhoo Uthuru constituents residing in Malé voted for MDP. We are sincerely grateful for the confidence shown by those who experience the Government's work and development efforts firsthand in Addu. At the same time, we respect every vote and remain committed to working harder, doing better, and delivering for all.
Hithadhoo 🩵 PNC: 958 🟡 MDP: 924 PNC lead: +34
Hithadhoo Uthuru (Malé Area) 🩵 PNC: 355 🟡 MDP: 451 MDP lead: +96
A team of experts from the China Railway Design Corporation has arrived in the Maldives to begin the site inspection and design work for the Male and Villimale Road Redevelopment Plan project.
China has always prioritized the road issues that are of concern to the Maldivian people, and will work with the Maldives to improve the road drainage system to benefit people's livelihoods.
On this #GlobalDayofParents, we honour the selfless commitment of parents whose lifelong sacrifice nurtures the foundation of our families. Their love and resilience shape future generations, the strength of our nation, and we stand together for parents in recognizing their vital role in Maldivian society.
This administration remains steadfast in supporting parents and protecting every child’s future, by investing in education, healthcare, and community programs that uphold the Maldivian tradition of family as the cornerstone of our society.
Engaged with UN-Habitat, the World Bank and international partners at #WUF13 in Baku, held under the theme “Housing the World: Safe and Resilient Cities and Communities,” on the Maldives’ priorities and challenges in climate adaptation, housing and sustainable urban development.
Also had the pleasure of holding a bilateral meeting with Ms. Anacláudia Rossbach, United Nations Under-Secretary-General and Executive Director of UN-Habitat.
During the discussions, I highlighted the need for climate adaptation financing mechanisms to become more accessible, responsive and available at the scale required by vulnerable nations. I also advocated for recognising voluntary population consolidation as a climate adaptation measure, and housing as essential resilience infrastructure for Small Island Developing States.
I warmly welcome the United Kingdom’s decision to suspend tariffs on tuna imports effective 20th May 2026.
This important development will support British consumers while delivering meaningful benefits to the Maldives’ fisheries sector, strengthening fishermen’s incomes, supporting island livelihoods, and expanding opportunities for sustainably caught Maldivian tuna in the UK market.
The Maldives is globally recognised for its world-leading pole-and-line tuna industry and its commitment to responsible and sustainable fishing practices. This milestone reflects the close partnership between the Maldives and the UK and the importance both countries place on sustainable trade and economic resilience.
I thank the UK Government and all partners who contributed to this positive step forward for our fishermen and our economy. 🇲🇻🇬🇧
