Modern political praxis demands pragmatic leadership. A captain known for abandoning ship at the slightest sign of a storm lacks the courage required in leadership. Successful political parties are good at exploiting the weaknesses of their opponents. Crying infiltration when outfoxed by your opponents is not only a sign that a leader is clueless but also betrays lack of resilience which is a prerequisite in politics especially when fighting a former liberation movement such as Zanu PF. If Chamisa goes ahead and forms another structureless political formation as is widely expected, he will become a political startup specialist who unfortunate has no vision to grow his creations. Even in business it is a known fact that popularity of a product or service does not always translate to profit. Parties such as CCC and the one that Chamisa may soon launch are full of hype but you can’t rely on hype to dislodge Zanu PF. You need proper governance structures and an informed leadership. Contrast Zanu PF’s slogan “chakabatwa kuti dzvii” and Chamisa’s “God is in it” and you will realize the gap in ideology is too wide for there to be even the slightest chance of competition. The Zanu PF slogan, “chakabatwa kuti dzvii” says we are in control of our destiny while “God is in it” betrays a people feigning confidence who relies on God as if Zanu PF has a different God. The other issue that should not be ignored is the calibre of foot soldiers. Looking at those who are purportedly in Chamisa’ camp it is not difficult to see that there is no contest. How do you compare student leaders like Ostalos with the likes of Owen Muda? If indeed Chamisa goes ahead with his new project, my advice to Zanu PF is not to waste resources on stillborn babies. They must focus on the likes of Sikala, Ncube, Biti and even the fox Tsabangu. These are the future leaders of the real opposition in Zimbabwe. Prof Mlevu
