Jews didn’t learn Aramaic in Babylon, they learned Chaldean.

A Jewish father living in Egypt around 402 BC, transferred ownership of his house to his daughter on a sheet of papyrus.

The document, written in Imperial Aramaic, was discovered on the island of Elephantine in southern Egypt, home to a thriving Jewish community during the Persian period. Today, it is housed in the Brooklyn Museum.

In paraphrase, the legal document states:

“I, Ananiah son of Azariah, transfer ownership of my house to my daughter, Yehoishema. From this day forward, the house belongs to her, and her rights to it are formally recognized.”

Although this is an ordinary property deed, it provides a remarkable glimpse into Jewish life nearly 2,400 years ago. It shows that Jews in ancient Egypt owned homes, drafted legal contracts in Aramaic, and formally transferred property within their families under Persian rule. It also demonstrates that women could own and inherit property through legally recognized agreements.

Consider the historical context. This document was written approximately 780 years after the Exodus from Egypt, about 180 years after the destruction of the First Temple, and around 135 years after the return to Zion from the Babylonian exile.

Issa Hanna helped finalize Jawad Salim’s sketch into the official design used by the Iraqi state.

The Chaldeans passed their philosophy from father to son. The son was exempted from all other employment. His only job was to learn what his father knew and believe it more firmly than his father did. When Pico found this text he told Ficino he had the original in Chaldee. When Pico died Ficino found it among his papers. The book outlived the man who carried it the way the son outlives the father who taught him. The chain does not require any particular link to continue. It requires only that each link hold long enough to pass the weight forward.
