On September 20, 2001, #18 South Carolina faced #17 Mississippi State in the first game between two NCAA Division I teams played after 9/11.
Before kickoff, players from both teams came together and helped unfurl a massive American flag across the field. They locked arms during the national anthem. Players wiped tears from their eyes. Instead of two fan bases, for a few moments, it felt like everyone in the stadium was on the same team. The stadium, the college football world, unified as one.
