Keir Starmer’s speech was sad to watch. With so many resets, even his reset button needs a reset.

But I do not take pleasure in watching the Prime Minister flounder. The country needs leadership, not another speech from a man who clearly knows something has gone badly wrong, but still can't explain why.

This is Labour’s real problem. It is not just Starmer - all the pretenders jostling for his job do not have the answers either, because they all believe the same things: more welfare, more state control, more borrowing, more regulation. They are busy arguing over who should drive the car, but the truth is they are all heading in the wrong direction. They have no vision for the future.

What we need is to get Britain working again. That is why I have proposed an alternative King’s Speech with a a clear plan to reward effort, cut the cost of government, secure our borders, rebuild industry and back families who do the right thing.

If Labour are serious about fixing the country they could do all of this tomorrow. Whether they have the bravery or the common sense to do that is a different matter.

An LBC caller asked Badenoch how a Muslim could trust the Conservative Party after Shadow Justice Secretary Nick Timothy criticized mass Ramadan public prayer in Trafalgar Square as “an act of domination.” Badenoch did not duck.

British law over religious law. British culture over religious deference. The right to criticize ANY religion — Christianity, Islam, all of them — is a non-negotiable feature of a free society, not a privilege the majority granted to the minority.

This is the Western mainstream conservative position. Badenoch — daughter of Nigerian immigrants, raised Christian, lived among Muslims her whole childhood — said it on national radio without hedging, without apologizing, and without softening it for the audience.

But it was Kemi Badenoch who stole the show today.

Reasoning, perhaps, that Starmer’s instinct is to hide behind process, she opted to make hypocrisy the thrust of her argument – a sign perhaps of how much the events of 2022 are scarred in the collective Tory psyche.

Starmer, she said, had told Boris Johnson that ‘if “he misled the house, he must resign”. Does he stand by those words, or is there one rule for him and another for everyone else?’

Why does Sir Keir Starmer want to be Prime Minister? It’s hard to know. But what’s certain is that Britain is paying the price of having a PM with no interest in doing the job.

Perhaps you think ‘all politicians are liars’. Yet the disgraceful appointment of Peter Mandelson points not just to dishonesty, but to a prime minister too idle to ask basic questions and too weak to face the answers.

Even by his own defence (fanciful as it is), Starmer has shown himself lacking in any grip, to be lazy in his thinking and, as it turns out, too idle to ask the most basic questions of his staff.

In fact, the real scandal is not the appointment of Mandelson - serious though that is - but the woeful direction of our country under Starmer.

The claim that nobody at the heart of government — ie close to Starmer — knew Mandelson had flunked his security vetting is unravelling at a rate of knots.
Starmer’s head of comms was alerted by the media last September.
Sources tell me multiple folks in the Cabinet Office (where the UK Security Vetting unit is based) had known for quite some time.
Cat Little, Cabinet Office Permanent Secretary, even had a copy of the UK Sec Vet January 2025 document concluding Mandelson was unfit to be US ambassador.
She informed the new cabinet secretary Antonia Romeo.
Soon there were about a dozen lawyers and officials crawling all over it.
Such matters don’t stay secret for long in the upper echelons of Whitehall.
But it seems the PM was still in the dark … until last Tuesday.
