#ArtNetNews: The fall auction season in New York got off to a robust start on Monday night, as Christie’s held an energetic and well-attended evening sale of 20th-century art at its Rockefeller Center salesroom. First up was a small but potent 18-lot offering from the private collection of Robert and Patricia Weis, which was followed by the usual 20th-century auction.
What really stood out was the high level of in-person, competitive bidding in a sale that carried a large number of guarantees, from both third parties and the house, ensuring that works would sell.
The event provided a much-needed dose of market confidence after months of art fair cancellations and postponements, as well as a spate of gallery closures. Will the energy and demand spill over to this jam-packed auction week? Only time will tell. To get a sense of Monday’s action, we’ve crunched the dual-sale figures for the Weis and 20th-century sales below. Read on for the stats.
