This is one of the 19 bridges currently under construction in the Eastern Cape as part of the Welisizwe Rural Bridges Programme.

Many of these bridges are in flood-ravaged districts such as OR Tambo, Alfred Nzo and Amathole.

10 of these bridges are at Port St. Johns, Mbhashe and Ntabankulu get 3 bridges, whilst Winnie Madikizela-Mandela, Ingquza Hill and Umzimvubu each receive one.

One of the bridges is the infamous Tebetebe bridge which dominated social media platforms and mainstream media last year as a group of men were filmed carrying a coffin across the dangling bridge.
