Today at #ILTACON2026, the largest legal technology conference globally, we launched Thomson, our first proprietary large language model, built in-house, and fully owned and controlled by Thomson Reuters.
A few lines from today's announcement that stuck with us:
“Thomson proves what’s possible when you build AI on decades of proprietary content and editorial expertise,” said Steve Hasker, CEO of Thomson Reuters. “That’s an advantage only Thomson Reuters has, and it shows in the results: our early evaluations put Thomson on par with the latest frontier models across a range of tasks. We’re putting it to work in CoCounsel Legal, with more capabilities and sovereign AI options to come. This is the bar we intend to keep raising.”
This is Fiduciary-Grade AI™ in practice. The standard we set for AI built for professionals who cannot afford to be wrong.
Thomson's first deployment is inside Tabular Analysis in CoCounsel Legal — exactly the kind of high-volume, structured document review where a purpose-built model's advantage shows up immediately. CoCounsel Legal remains multi-model by design, applying Thomson where it delivers the clearest advantage and other leading models elsewhere.

"Attorneys typing a prompt into a tool isn't true adoption."
That's Parker Poe Adams & Bernstein LLP partner Carlos Manzano on where legal AI actually stands in 2026.
And Parker Poe CIO Skip Lohmeyer names the operational counterpart: "Real transformation happens when adoption moves beyond a handful of early enthusiasts and becomes part of how the organization operates."
Together, they describe the "from permission to performance" shift. Two years ago, clients asked whether firms were able to use AI. Today, with in-house teams using AI themselves, they're asking what value outside counsel delivers that their own capable teams can't.

Nashville, we’re not ready to leave.
Four days of #ILTACON2026 are in the books, and honestly, we’re still processing it all. Our booth stayed busy from open to close. At our Company Update, a full room heard Steve Hasker say we’re “not loyal to a model, we’re loyal to the right answer,” right before he unveiled Thomson, the LLM we built from the ground up on our own content and real legal work.
But if we’re being honest, the best part of this week wasn’t on a stage. It was getting to show customers the next generation of CoCounsel Legal in person and hearing their reactions as they saw what Fiduciary-Grade AI™ could mean for the way they work. That’s the stuff that reminds you why we do this.
We also got to have fun with people. We stepped into the world of #TheCoCo at our hospitality suite, watched people light up taking photos at her desk, and danced (loudly, unashamedly) to Little Big Town with customers and partners who’ve become genuine friends over the years.
To everyone who stopped by, sat in on a session, asked a hard question, or just told us what’s actually keeping you up at night, thank you. We’ll take those conversations home with us.
See you next year, ILTACON.

Most AI isn't built for the moments where you can't afford to be wrong. CoCounsel Legal is.

“You can’t do this with a third-party model.”
Alexander Kardos-Nyheim, Senior Director, Thomson Reuters Foundational Research, explains what owning our own LLM unlocks.
Because we control the model, we can improve it in the exact direction our customers need, train it around the standards of professional work, and deploy it within the trusted environments our customers rely on.
That’s the advantage of owning the intelligence that matters most, and what Fiduciary-Grade AI™ looks like in practice.

Day two at #ILTACON2026 started early with a press and partnerships breakfast that brought reporters, industry partners and Thomson Reuters leaders together for an open conversation about where legal AI is headed.
That same curiosity carried through the rest of the day. In sessions, demos and conversations at our booth, one theme kept coming up: legal professionals want AI that can earn their trust and deliver in high-stakes work.
Throughout the day, attendees stopped by our booth to meet The CoCo, see the next generation of CoCounsel Legal in action, and explore what Fiduciary-Grade AI™ could mean for their work. The booth theater also drew a full house for “Document Analysis, Elevated,” where Alexander Kardos-Nyheim, Senior Director at TR Labs, demonstrated tabular analysis powered by Thomson, our new purpose-built LLM.
We ended the day at Foundry Fieldhouse, where our Chief Marketing and Communications Officer, Amy Messano, announced a $25,000 donation to Dolly Parton’s Imagination Library. Then Little Big Town took the stage and kept the crowd on its feet, singing and dancing all night long.
A memorable day in Nashville.

“Its integration with @DeepJudgeAI , Westlaw, and Practical Law will help our lawyers access firm and legal knowledge more effectively, while maintaining the quality and professional judgment our clients expect.”
That's @GT_Law, Chief Pricing and Innovation Officer, Matthew Beekhuizen, on what firmwide deployment of the next generation of CoCounsel Legal means for the firm's lawyers.
Watch below for more of his takeaways from today's announcement—and what four years of close collaboration with Thomson Reuters looks like in practice.

Every eval loop on a rented model ends at the same four knobs: system prompt, new tools, new skills, harness tweaks. Or you wait for the next model.
@JoelHron runs that loop on CoCounsel Bench. The attorney judgments feeding it ("B is better than A because...") are some of the most valuable data @thomsonreuters produces, and on a rented model they improve a prompt and then evaporate at the next release.
Joel's case for training Thomson is about where that judgment goes. On @chain_ofthought: https://t.co/cx3h4575xG
