Burkina Faso🇧🇫 moves to reclaim mining wealth with new state-backed sovereign investment fund:

Ouagadougou, Burkina Faso — May 22, 2026
In a bold push for greater economic sovereignty, the government of Burkina Faso has officially established a new sovereign mining investment fund aimed at channeling mineral revenues into long-term national development.
The Council of Ministers adopted a decree on Thursday creating the Fonds Souverain Minier d’Investissements du Burkina Faso (FSMIB), named “Siniyan-Sigui.” The fund is designed to capture surplus revenues from the country’s booming mining sector — particularly gold — and redirect them toward strategic infrastructure, industrial projects, and economic transformation.
Key objectives of the Siniyan-Sigui Fund:
• Convert excess mining revenues (above a set reference price) into productive investments
• Finance major infrastructure and industrial projects starting in 2027
• Strengthen state control over the nation’s natural resources
• Support broader goals of economic independence and development under the current transitional government
This move comes as Burkina Faso continues aggressive mining sector reforms, including increased state participation in gold mines, nationalization of certain assets, and record gold production of 94 tonnes in 2025. The country is positioning itself as one of Africa’s rising gold powerhouses.
Analysts see the fund as a significant step in resource nationalism, similar to strategies used by other resource-rich nations to move beyond raw commodity exports toward value creation and long-term wealth building.
