Want to nurture your child’s ability to problem solve? If so, think like Goldilocks. 🐻 🐻 🐻
While I’m not sure that “struggle” is the word I would have chosen to caption this video, I’m nonetheless really appreciative of its message.
In life we all encounter barriers and challenges - and while it’s tempting to remove them from our children’s paths, this isn’t doing them any favors in the long run.
Instead what we’re hoping to nurture is resilience and fortitude.
So when you spot a challenging situation, give it what I’ll call “The Goldilocks Assessment.”
You remember Goldilocks, yes? From The Three Bears story?
What you’re looking for are challenges that are not too easy and not too hard, but JUST RIGHT for your child’s ability and developmental stage.
If it’s something that’s clearly beyond your child’s ability to resolve independently, jump right in.
But if it’s not, give them just a moment.
Watch to see how they handle it.
If they need your help, start small.
Begin with guiding questions that might scaffold your child to success… and intervene more fully from there as needed.
If I have a complaint about this video it’s that we didn’t get to hear what I suspect was a rich and nurturing back and forth with mom as she coached and encouraged our hero toward resolution.
Remember that we can only learn to solve problems by encountering them.
So try to remove only those that really need adult intervention.

How do you get kids to love reading? Make it central to everything you do. Read to them every day. Always give them time to read for their own entertainment. Let them choose their own books freely. Reading for pleasure changes lives FOREVER! #literacy

Judi Dench was on Graham Norton last night to push her new book about her life and work with Shakespeare. After making the point we quote Shakespeare daily without knowing it, this happened:
