A woman one month into a new job at the FDA was handed an application to approve a sleeping pill. It looked routine. They gave it to her because she was new and it seemed like an easy one to start on.

She read the file and something was missing. No evidence at all that the drug was safe in pregnancy, and it was being sold as a remedy for morning sickness. The drug was thalidomide, and West Germany was getting through a million doses a day.

Frances Kelsey asked for more data. The company sent representatives to her office, then telephoned her at all hours, then went over her head to her supervisors. Between them they contacted her and her boss around fifty separate times. She later said most of what they called her could not be printed. Ten million tablets were already sitting in warehouses waiting for her signature.

She said no six times. And while she held the line, doctors in Germany and Australia were piecing together what was happening to babies whose mothers had taken it. Limbs that had never formed, hands and feet attached directly at the shoulder and hip, in at least 4,000 children across Europe. The company withdrew its American application in 1962.

Seventeen cases turned up in the United States, all from free samples doctors had handed out before any approval. Without her it would have been thousands.

Congress passed a new law that same year requiring companies to prove a drug is both safe and effective, and requiring informed consent from anyone in a trial. Those rules are now used worldwide. Kennedy gave her the highest civilian award in the country and she was the second woman ever to receive it. She stayed at the FDA another 45 years and died in 2015 at 101.

Here is some context for those asking/wondering what we’re talking about…

The Story of QDEOKS (a.k.a. Q 🦆)

So, QDEOKS, a.k.a. Q 🦆, was an ARMY who became something of a legend in the streaming trenches sometime around 2019 to 2022, if I remember correctly. 🤔🤔🤔

During those years, QDEOKS was extremely active in helping ARMY access streams for BTS content that was either paid, region-locked, or otherwise inaccessible to international fans.

QDEOKS became so synonymous with getting ARMY access to paid content that the name became pretty well known within the fandom and, apparently, to the people on the other side of the paywall too. 😂

But QDEOKS wasn't just about finding a stream when BigHit put something behind a paywall.

When COVID hit in 2020 and the Map of the Soul tour was postponed, BTS and ARMY were suddenly stuck at home, the world was falling apart, and we were all desperately looking for ways to feel connected to each other and to BTS themselves.

And this is where QDEOKS really cemented their place in ARMY history.

Before BigHit officially announced BANG BANG CON, QDEOKS organised a massive fan-run online concert marathon, streaming archived BTS concerts, and Musters across platforms and creating an actual schedule so ARMY around the world could all tune in together.

And when I say massive, I mean this was not QDEOKS sitting in a corner with a laptop going, "Hey guys, wanna watch a DVD?" 😂

It was a whole damn production.

There was a fan-made concert schedule, streams running back-to-back, tens of thousands upon thousands of ARMY tuning in, and live commentary on the TL absolutely losing our collective minds.

It gave ARMY something that was desperately needed during lockdown: a reason to gather and find some happiness.

And then, shortly afterwards, BigHit announced BANG BANG CON.

Now, I don't want to claim that QDEOKS single-handedly invented BANG BANG CON because unless Big Hit themselves have gone on record saying that, we simply don't know that. But the timing is 👀 😉

QDEOKS had already demonstrated that ARMY would absolutely turn up for an organised online BTS concert marathon, and then Big Hit launched an official version of essentially the same basic idea.

So whether you call it inspiration, influence, coincidence, or BigHit seeing what ARMY were already doing and thinking "hmmmmm, perhaps we should be doing this ourselves"...

QDEOKS's contribution to that moment in ARMY history is pretty damn significant.

And honestly, during a global pandemic, when people were isolated in their homes and couldn't go anywhere, BANG BANG CON became one of the things that brought ARMY together.

So when people talk about QDEOKS as just some account that used to find streams, they're missing a pretty big part of the story.

And THEN we get to another part of the QDEOKS story.

During BTS or BTS-related broadcasts, particularly region-locked ones, unofficial streams would frequently get taken down, only for another one to appear shortly afterwards.

It basically became Whac-A-Mole: BTS Broke-ARMY Edition.

🔨 That one gets taken down.

🦆 Q2 has entered the chat.

🔨 TAKEN DOWN.

🦆 Q3 HAS ENTERED THE CHAT.

You get the idea. 😂

One particularly memorable example was the December 31, 2020 to January 1, 2021 New Year's Eve Live concert.

The screenshot below shows the message that appeared on unofficial streams while the concert was in progress, warning viewers that the broadcast was unauthorised and directing them towards the official service.

QDEOKS was reportedly one of the largest, if not the largest, unofficial streams being targeted at the time.

So yes, somewhere in BigHit's control room there was apparently a team of people watching illegal streams and trying to shut them down.

And they still do this now.

So don't be surprised when some rando account suddenly DMs you asking, "where are you watching?" That could be a BigHit intern. 😂😂😂

QDEOKS also had a website that served as a repository for streams and video content. And that site, unsurprisingly, also found itself repeatedly dealing with takedowns.

I honestly don't know exactly what eventually happened to the site. But after years of dealing with copyright enforcement and the general headache of running an unofficial streaming operation for one of the most heavily image-protected acts on the planet, QDEOKS eventually appears to have hung up the streaming boots and retired from the game.

And honestly? Fair.

Imagine spending years playing digital cat-and-mouse with BigHit's lawyers and copyright department just so some ARMY in another country can watch BTS on a stream at 3 a.m. 😭

As far as I know, QDEOKS is still around and still an ARMY, occasionally appearing here on the TL.

But the streaming era of Q 🦆? Retired.

She served her time in the trenches so that ARMY could watch Bangtan. 🫡

QDEOKS, wherever you are: thank you for your service. 😂

Sharing an ARMY’s post from Weverse because I was moved by her love and sincerity:

“I’m feeling a bit sad today, so I’d like to talk here, maybe because I’ve always felt comfortable enough with BTS to let my voice flow freely.

I’ve been in the fandom for many years. I’ve defended the members from many things that have happened, and I’ve understood and supported them when they decided to share their perspectives on various issues, including the fandom's own attitudes. I was all ears for you for years, always trying to understand you and change what you didn’t like about us.

That’s why today, I’d like you to listen to me.

I joined this fandom because I always felt that BTS genuinely cared about listening to us, that your words and actions were authentic, and that I had found a place where I could feel understood. I’ve always believed you are good people, and I still do; otherwise, I wouldn’t be posting this.

I don’t blame you for the things CB has done. I find him despicable, and I’ve always felt nothing but disgust and repulsion toward him. He has done horrible things for which, obviously, no member of BTS is to blame, and which I am certain you would never condone. However, I can’t overlook the fact that giving him visibility through concert stories and photos feels like a huge mistake. Even if you don’t intend to, that content reaches thousands of people and ends up cleaning the image of someone who doesn't deserve it and who should be far away from the stage. I don’t believe that was your intention, but sometimes we do things that trigger consequences we don't foresee, even if it wasn't our goal. And it’s okay to ask ourselves if that’s the image we want to project, if that’s the effect we want to create.

I get it, nobody is perfect, and I’m not saying otherwise. I think we all have our own contradictions, but I personally like it when people point mine out so I can grow and become a better person. BTS has said many times that you’d love ARMY to be the kind of fandom that doesn't put you on a pedestal, allowing you to make mistakes and learn from them.

I know you would love to live a normal life where everything you do isn't judged by thousands of people, but unfortunately, that’s not the reality, and the decisions you make carry a lot of weight. If a person like CB continues to be respected in the industry and keeps filling stadiums, it’s because many people choose to ignore what he did and pretend it never happened. But it did happen, and none of it can be erased. And it hurts me deeply that you chose to look the other way. You are not to blame for what CB did, nor are you the only ones supporting him, but it hurts particularly with you because you are people I love and hold in high regard. Many people can do something I consider wrong, but it will always hurt more coming from a friend, my family, or you in this case. Not because I hold you to a different standard, but because I hold a deep affection for you. I suppose you can understand that feeling; it also hurts you when ARMY makes mistakes, and you also expect a lot from us because you know us and love us.

This doesn't erase all the support women have received from you, I do NOT believe any of that was performative. I believe in you, I believe you are good people, but I also believe good people can make mistakes, and I think you made one here. I know that you, as men, have no idea what we as women go through, and that’s why I’d like you to understand how painful it is for us to see people like CB continue to receive love and applause despite having caused so much harm to some of us.
