Current Siaya Governor James Orengo and Ida Odinga have not been on good terms for some time, largely due to internal disagreements within ODM and personal differences linked to political decisions made by Raila Odinga in his later years. However, following Raila’s death less than two days ago, Orengo chose to set aside those differences, showing maturity and respect during this difficult moment for the Odinga family and the Luo nation.

Although many Luos may not currently give Orengo their full attention, he remains one of the most politically astute and well-informed leaders in the region. Having been close to Raila for decades and involved in the inner workings of ODM, Orengo has deep insight into the unfolding dynamics within Siaya, Migori, Kisumu, and Homa Bay counties.

At one point, Orengo reportedly tried to advise Raila on several sensitive issues including his dalliance with President William Ruto and the internal direction of ODM but his counsel was often ignored. Now, in the aftermath of Raila’s passing, many of Orengo’s warnings seem to have come true, particularly regarding the weakening of ODM’s influence and the political confusion gripping the Nyanza region.

While Raila’s death marks the end of an era, leaders like Orengo may hold the key to what comes next especially as Luo politics enters a new, uncertain chapter.
