@paul_jkrause Clear winner for me: Stephen King - Mr. Mercedes. I just had no interest in reading it, figuring it was just another demonic car story. Then I began my goal of reading every King book (I had already read a ton of them) and I came to that one. It's now one of my favorites!
@stephenRB4 Multiple POVs isn't head hopping. Switching POVs when you're supposed to be in a different one is, and that can only be confusing for the reader. I would never recommend showing a POV you didn't establish.
#authorbeware So disappointing. Thought I had a genuinely helpful comment, turned out to be a thinly veiled scam / service sales attempt. Don't know if it's this person doing it, or they got hacked. Post history mentions they have assistants posting on their behalf. Blocked.
@WilChanWrites I like those guides after I read the book. It's so interesting when characters go from "dgjjydsghhg" to "doug." 😂 The main one I remember finding the guide particularly valuable was Orson Scott Card's Speaker for the Dead.
@celestemcoffman I'm not sure I'd be able to get them to beta read for a second book, however. It's a big ask. I suspect I'll have to find different readers next time.
@celestemcoffman Everyone seems to handle it their own way. I chose to recruit friends and family. The critical things are that they are readers, and that they'll be brutally honest. All of them provided extremely valuable and actionable feedback.
@vickyweberbooks That's got to be particularly difficult to keep literary agent & author promotion balanced. Do you use different platforms or profiles to keep them separate?
@vickyweberbooks Writing is one of the few things I have control of in my life when things I once thought were permanent suddenly weren't. Writing is entirely mine. Even if I never get an offer of rep, even if I never publish, I'm in control of seeing it through.
Least fun task for the day: Revising my synopsis. 😫
I realized I've focused exclusively on the "A plot," and I want to include an important subplot, and also some themes that run through the whole book.

@Jnike9393 Doubts about effectiveness aside, I don't see a downside to trying it. I would encourage you to check it out. Maybe it will be the thing that connects you with your dream agent! Who knows?
