Anti-immigrant Protest in Belfast Exposes Double Standards of the media as South Africa is labelled xenophobic for protesting against immigration-related issues while Ireland is not
Violent anti-immigration protests in Belfast following a stabbing incident and peaceful marches in South Africa have exposed inconsistent treatment and labeling of similar public responses to immigration issues. The contrasting media framing has raised questions how different countries fighting similar issues related to migrants, are labeled differently, while the media quickly labels South Africans as xenophobic for marching against illegal immigrants, Ireland is not labeled xenophobic despite violent protests and attacks against immigrants.
In north Belfast on June 8, 2026, Sudanese asylum seeker Hadi Alodid allegedly stabbed 44-year-old Stephen Ogilvie, causing severe injuries including loss of his left eye. He was arrested and charged with attempted murder and remanded in custody. The incident triggered large-scale protests across Northern Ireland from June 9.
The Belfast demonstrations escalated into violence, with vehicles, a bus, and homes set alight. Police used water cannons and made arrests as unrest spread. Coverage of the events largely referred to the situation as anti-immigration protests or riots, without consistent application of xenophobia labels often used at South Africa.
In South Africa, the March and March movement led by Jacinta Ngobese-Zuma has organised nationwide marches calling for enforcement against illegal immigration, a June 30, 2026 deadline, and prioritisation of citizens for services. Despite organisers maintaining that the marches are peaceful advocacy, the movement has been accused by the media and some politicians, of inciting hate or violence against immigrants.
Celebrating South Africaโs downfall in the World Cup wonโt help your country get back on its feet. Thatโs just a defeat away from home, yet you were defeated at home, found refuge in South Africa, and now youโre hating on them? Make it make sense.

According to the Minister of @HomeAffairsSA , thorough background checks were conducted on all deportees before they arrived in South Africa... except there was apparently no information about any criminal records to check.
The real question remains: if three foreign nationals slipped through an international deportation operation involving multiple governments and departments, what confidence should South Africans have that similar oversights are not happening elsewhere?
