๐ฌ๐ง Most British schoolchildren are taught about Magna Carta.
They are taught it was sealed in twelve fifteen at Runnymede.
They are taught it is the foundation of English liberty.
They are taught it is one of the most important documents in human history.
They are not taught what came next.
They are not taught about the eighty years between twelve fifteen and twelve ninety-five when ordinary Englishmen forced three successive kings to write down, for the first time in any kingdom in medieval Europe, what English law was, what English liberty was, and how an English king must govern.
They are not taught about the Charter of the Forest, which restored the right to graze, gather firewood, and live on common land, and which remained in force for seven hundred and fifty-four years.
They are not taught about the Provisions of Oxford in twelve fifty-eight, often called England's first written constitution, which placed the king under a council of fifteen and required Parliament to meet three times a year.
They are not taught about the Provisions of Westminster in twelve fifty-nine, which subjected the barons themselves to the same law they had forced upon the king.
They are not taught about Simon de Montfort, an earl born in France who died for England, who summoned the first Parliament in English history to include ordinary commoners alongside the great lords.
They are not taught about the Statute of Marlborough in twelve sixty-seven, which is the oldest piece of statute law in the United Kingdom still in force today. โ๏ธ
Seven hundred and fifty-nine years old.
If you've ever taken a debt to court in England, you've used it. ๐ If you've ever rented a home, you've been protected by it. ๐ If a creditor can't lawfully drag your possessions into the street to settle what you owe, that's because of a law signed seven hundred and fifty-nine years ago.
They are not taught about the Model Parliament of twelve ninety-five, summoned by Edward the First, which became the shape of every English Parliament since.
Eighty years. Three successive kings. The first written constitution in any kingdom in medieval Europe.
It was not given to them. It was not handed down from God or king or Pope.
โ๏ธ It was written. By Englishmen. For England.
๐ฌ๐ง The British write their own history. They always have.
This one needed more than a thread. The full story is in our video, watch it below ๐

You have walked past one of these and never known what it was. ๐ฌ๐ง
1,600 buildings across Britain. 36,000 people inside them tonight. ๐๏ธ
Most of them built by people who died before any of us were born. โฑ๏ธ
The buildings are called almshouses. ๐๏ธ
In the Lincolnshire town of Stamford, Browne's Hospital was built in 1485 by a wool merchant called William Browne. ๐ He built it to house twelve elderly people who could not house themselves.
Five hundred and forty years later, twelve elderly people are still living there. โณ
It has never stopped.
Browne was not alone. Some almshouses were built in the fourteen hundreds. Some in the fifteen hundreds. Some in the sixteen hundreds.
A wool merchant. A bishop. A widow. A weaver. And many, many more. ๐ฏ๏ธ
Each one looking at the people around them who had nothing, and deciding that something had to be built. Each one leaving their money to keep it open after they were gone. โ๏ธ
Each building still standing. Each building still housing. ๐
Six centuries of British people looking after each other. ๐ค
Six centuries of homes still open to those who need them. ๐ช
This is what Britain has always been. ๐ฌ๐ง
This is what we mean when we say we're proud of where we come from. ๐
We are a growing community of British people, proud of an island that built a better life for everyone on it. And then for half the world. ๐
The homes. The laws. The hospitals. The freedoms.
Not waiting. Not asking. Building. ๐งฑ
This is who we are. This is who we have always been.

There is a British tradition that has been happening every spring for over 800 years. ๐ฌ๐ง
The Black Death didn't stop it. The Reformation didn't stop it. Cromwell tried to abolish it. He failed. Two World Wars couldn't stop it.
Almost nobody knows about it.
It happened five weeks ago. โณ
Every spring, on the Thursday before Easter, the King or Queen of England personally gives silver coins to elderly British people who have spent their lives serving their communities. ๐ช
The coins come in two small leather purses. One white. One red.
The recipients keep the silver coins for the rest of their lives.
It started in 1210. An English king walked among thirteen elderly people in his palace, and gave them silver coins from his own hand.
Every English king and queen since then has done the same. โ๏ธ
The kings have changed. The queens have changed. The cathedrals have changed. The recipients have changed.
The act has not.
The same silver coins. The same two purses. The same Thursday in spring.
Last month, in a small cathedral in North Wales, the King of England walked among one hundred and fifty-four elderly British people, and gave them silver coins from his own hand. ๐ฌ๐ง
Eight hundred and sixteen years. More than forty British monarchs. One unbroken tradition. ๐
This is what Britain has always been.
A country that does not forget the people who served it.
We are a growing community of British people, proud of an island that has honoured its own for over a thousand years. ๐ฌ๐ง
The coins. The cathedrals. The crowns. The keeping.
Not forgetting. Not abandoning. Holding.
This is who we are. This is who we have always been.

In Parliament today the Prime Minister was challenged about the grooming gangs inquiry.
Katie Lam raised three concerns about the proposed terms of reference.
The inquiry:
1. Will not examine the role of race or religion in motivating these crimes.
2. Will not lead to officials who covered up the abuse being prosecuted.
3. Will investigate only a select number of cases.
The consultation on the inquiryโs terms of reference closes this week. So she asked a simple question.
If victims and members of the public submit responses demanding these issues be included, will the government amend the terms of reference?
Keir Starmer would not answer.
He would not confirm the consultation is genuine.
He would not confirm submissions will shape the inquiry.
Instead, he changed the subject and attacked the MP asking the question.
If the consultation cannot change the terms of reference of the inquiry, the public is entitled to ask what exactly is it for?
What did I tell you about the national inquiry being a cover up? Now there is no doubt left, either accept what comes or help fight back.
