South African Reserve Bank increased interest rates by 25bps. The bank revised down SA’s growth outlook significantly, but highlighted that the risks to SA inflation are still to the upside. Two members of the MPC wanted a hike of 50bps. The decision appears appropriate
The MPC decided to increase the repurchase rate by 75 basis points to 6.25% per year, with effect from the 23rd of September 2022. Three members
of the Committee preferred the announced increase. Two members preferred a 100
basis points increase.
SA consumer inflation shocked on the upside in May 22, rising to 6.5%. This was mostly due to higher food prices. Unfortunately, large petrol price increases still ahead, which will push SA inflation above 7%, forcing the Reserve Bank to continue to increase interest rates
IMF released their World Economic Outlook today. In general, global growth revised down across all major economic regions, while inflation revised higher. Key exception is commodity exporting countries. For SA however, growth kept unchanged at 1.9% in 2022 and a mere 1.4% in 2023

Fitch revised South Africa’s credit rating outlook from negative to stable. A welcome improvement, albeit a small change. The overall rating is still well below investment credit, but the revision to the outlook suggests Fitch feels that the fiscal deterioration has abated
