the concept is genius tho. using urinals being the most normal thing but at the same time because its them, it could make headlines. but also, THIS imagery making such vulturous behavior look even more shameless. but also cocky like "heres some headlines for you then. write"
can we talk about the door/window facing them and how it’s the perfect setup for someone to walk in at any moment yet they’re completely unbothered because it’s “normal” to have their privacy taken away… also notice how im bullshitting my way through this can theoryms take over damn
Dear whoever you are,
Your "20 years of struggle" doesn't give you the right to disrespect j-hope, especially when you clearly haven't sat with an album as critically acclaimed as “Jack In The Box”. And don't put him in the same sentence as idols from other labels who use company influence to collab with whoever's trending.
j-hope and BTS started from the bottom if you didn’t know that, a struggling company, zero industry privileges, even mocked by parts of the Korean hip-hop scene early on. They didn't get here on luck. They got here on preparation meeting opportunity. Big Hit didn't make BTS, BTS made Big Hit /HYBE what it is today.
Korean music critic Randy Suh put it well in a 2018 piece: "j-hope doesn't really owe the Korean hip hop scene much because it isn't where he got his start. He has since said with confidence that his musical roots are the 1980s and '90s hip hop that he grew up dancing to"
He didn't come up through the underground rap scene, but he spent his late teens studying it and building a flow that's entirely his own. That groundwork is what made him the first South Korean artist to headline a major U.S. festival, not a Big Hit connection, but raw talent. That's also where he met J. Cole in person, told him he was his muse, and exchanged numbers. That friendship started artist to artist, not through some HYBE rep making a call. 🤨
“on the street” with J.Cole is j-hope’s way of paying respect to one his early hip-hop inspirations. He gave Jermaine has more bars in the song, that’s how much he respects him.
j-hope only collaborates with people he genuinely respects. Korean hip-hop legends like Yoon Mirae and Gaeko who joined him on "Neuron" didn't show up because he's popular. They showed up because they believe in his skill, and because he's cited them as inspirations since day one.
Years in the game don't automatically make you more deserving than someone else. Sure, some artists lean hard on their label, can't rap or sing live, and still get everything handed to them. But j-hope has never been one of them.
Twenty years of experience should teach you the difference between resenting someone’s success and understanding it. j-hope’s is the kind you study, not the kind you dismiss.
Ahh so the article they used to promote normal hinted towards like topics covering like defamation/deragotory headlines against them.
It seems like they are taking a dig at slanderous headlines made about them, oh they about to eat.
some solos saying the teaser makes them uncomfortable. Like the point of normal could literally be hitting them in the face at 140km/h and they just don't notice it 😭😭 media literacy crisis
Please. I just.
Okay. I'm going to ignore all the obvious stuff because I can't do it right now and focus on that door. Why is there a door in the center of the batroom that has apparently been bricked over and had a urinal placed in it?
Is this an existing bathroom? Probably not, right? BTS likely created this (and even if they didn't, they chose it) so this is some kind of symbolism.
Doors are usually representative of opportunity, escape, new beginnings, change. Urinals, while not traditional symbolism, can be representative of wasted potential or opportunity, frivolity (especially financially but could also be with time), and of intimate moments being forced into public spaces.
Then the condition of the door, this door is an older style (at least in the U.S.), it's a French door, with the locks at the top (and presumably bottom) and the large top window glass. I grew up in a house that is now about 140 years old and it didn't have these doors, it was the right age, but not fancy enough. However, look at the condition, it's distressed. The style suggests elegance and refinement, but the door is distressed and non-functional--more shabby chic.
I think it's interesting that the center urinal is dead center in the door and that, although it appears like the obvious location for RM to go to, he instead goes to one near the corner and between two other members. I don't know if this is a statement about the shared leadership and lack of oppressive hierarchy in BTS or if it's speaking to something else, but it's interesting.
Also, the wallpaper is inspired by traditional Chinese hand-painted wallpaper. I can't find a perfect match, but this is typically a symbol of luxury, elegance, refinement. Queen Victoria had similar wallpaper in one of her bedrooms. The fact that it's in a bathroom, not typically a space of refinement or elegance is also an interesting juxtaposition--especially since this is clearly a public bathroom. You do have classy, refined private bathrooms on occassion, but this one is ostensibly in a public location.
And again their is the faded appearance, almost drab coloring of the wallpaper in what is a beautiful, classic pattern, again, the decay or loss of what is elegant, graceful, refined. True beauty, skill, and refinement being delegated to spaces that are largely ignored and used for waste.
Spaces deliberately designed and intended to be ignored, where scrutiny and attention are considered rude at best.
We see this same pattern in the flooring. Hardwood floors, traditional hardwood floors, are almost prohibitively expensive these days. They require more attention and care to take care of and maintain, and they're typically found only in older or more luxurious homes, yet in this case we find one in this public restroom. A place where they are unlikely to be maintained properly, where they will be introduced to all kinds of materials and where they be all but ignored.
The setting and staging of this video is all about luxury, opulence, elegance and refinement fading, being ignored or being misued.
Wow. Apparently once I got started I had a lot to say. I didn't mean to spend 30 minutes on this. If anyone actually read this, you are a gem! 💜
Smth I noticed:
Do you see how there is almost always 1 spot between members? Social norms often describe it as polite to leave 1 spot between people (e.g. public transport) but here he has no choice but to pick a spot next to someone. He will be judged no matter his choice.
NORMAL TRAILER: The upper walls are covered in detailed, vintage murals.
below is just simple white urinals. can emphasise that a theme of elegance meets the mundane (?) a public bathroom is a place of raw utility where everyone is completely equal, they are doing something extremely human here.
2.0 MV: the contrast to 2.0 elevator scene in the same cramped up boxed situation reps unglamorous hustle behind the scenes. frantic process of stripping away their public personas to go perform at the highest level (their career status) bc you gotta keep that public persona up no matter how big you are.
Namjoon: We lost our chance to live a normal life in our 20s, instead we've lived an extraordinary 1. When it comes to sending msg I view each act as throwing tiny rocks on a wall. I hope when combined, will build a huge castle, thats how I feel abt @BTS_twt's work & music.
It hits harder when you remember he gave up his bright future as a contemporary dancer to go to seoul to chase his dream of becoming an idol, trained everyday til 4 am, slept for two hours and woke up at 6am for school and then went back to practice room. That little boy made it.
