You have to earn respect from your child. That happens by being respectable consistently through the years.
If they dont respect you (this is not the same as fear you,) by the time they are 8, their teen years will be the worst hell you ever lived through.
How to be respectable?
Have a healthy marriage. Be fair and consistent with discipline. Don't let the child divide and conquer the parents. Take him with you when you go to the hardware store or car dealership so he can see how adult men relate to other adults. Let him make mistakes without your judgment and then help him learn from them. Teach him things like how to winterize the garden hose or wash the car. When he is learning, expect that he won't get it on the first pass. The object of teaching him how to wash the car is not to efficiently accomplish the task. Let him tell you his troubles without immediately recommending the fix. Don't try to reason with him as if he were a little adult. Don't use him for emotional rescue. Don't let him manipulate you.

Until he is 10 to 11, he will think you hung the moon. After that, your coolness vanishes, and he will not seek out time with you because he prefers his friends.

Only you can teach him how to have healthy relationships and how to deal with conflict in a healthy way. You are teaching him how to treat women by the way you treat your wife.
