On this day, Sade released their fifth album, “Lovers Rock,” a raw exploration of love, heartbreak, resilience, and healing through minimalist production. Moving away from their earlier jazz influences, the album blends soul, R&B, soft rock, reggae, and neo-soul with simple arrangements and subtle reggae flourishes. Described by Sal Cinquemani of Slant Magazine as a concept album, it serves as a “soundtrack for lovers, lovers who are in love, making love, and lovers who have been scorned.”
