Here’s your crash course on tar 🧵

1. What is tar ?
tar = “ tape archive ”
It’s the go to tool for bundling files together ( with or without compression ) in Linux.

2. Create a .tar archive
tar -cvf archive.tar file1 file2 dir1
c = create
v = verbose ( show progress )
f = filename

3. Create a compressed .tar.gz archive
tar -czvf archive.tar.gz file1 dir1
z = gzip compression

4. Extract a .tar archive
tar -xvf archive.tar
x = extract

5. Extract a .tar.gz archive
tar -xzvf archive.tar.gz

6. List files inside an archive without extracting
tar -tvf archive.tar
t = list

7. Common tip
Use compression to save space :
-z → gzip (.gz)
-j → bzip2 (.bz2)
--zstd → zstd (.zst)

8. Why it’s powerful
