I’ve been a long time admirer of yours, Douglas. I’ve read The Madness of Crowds, The Strange Death of Europe, and The War on the West. I’ve defended your arguments. I’ve shared your opinions. But your recent behaviour on the JRE has exposed something I can no longer ignore: you have revealed yourself as a pompous hypocrite.

You mocked Darryl Cooper for expressing a view on Churchill, sneering that Cooper is not a historian. Which is strange, coming from a man who isn’t a historian either, yet feels entitled to pontificate on history, culture, and the West’s entire civilisational arc. So Cooper can’t have an opinion, but you can play philosopher, theologian, and military analyst all at once?

Worse still, you insist we must not examine Hitler and Nazi Germany independently, and that we must only accept the standard narrative as delivered by the victors. Really? Do you honestly believe the Allied version of WWII history is beyond question? That there’s no value in uncovering how the Third Reich came to power, not to excuse it, but to understand the machinery of evil?

History is written by the victors, you know that. Yet you’ve decided that half truths are okay in certain circumstances - the most important circumstances in the history of the modern world No lies. Is that intellectual honesty, or cowardice, or something else? (And yes, you can detect a note of accusation in that final disjunctive).

And what of free speech, Douglas? Do you believe in it only when it protects your speech? If historical enquiry is shut down on command, if alternative views are condemned without engagement, what, exactly, are you defending? It’s not truth. It’s orthodoxy.

But perhaps the most shameful silence of all is Gaza. You can write entire books lamenting Western moral collapse, but you can’t call the mass bombing of children a crime? You can’t name evil when it’s politically inconvenient?

You’ve shown yourself. A man brilliant with words, but unwilling to stand on moral ground when it costs you comfort.

You’re not a truth-teller anymore, Douglas. You’re a gatekeeper.
