What a lot of people don’t understand is development.

At 13, a kid might not be good enough to make an elite team. At 18, they might not have a Division I offer. That doesn’t mean the story is over.

Too often, many are fixated on how good a kid is at 15 or 16 years old. That has nothing to do with what a player could be five years down the road.

Players grow. They develop. They get stronger, faster, more skilled. Some hit late growth spurts. Some finally get the right opportunity. Some just don’t quit when others do.

But too often, labels get thrown on them way too early.
“Too small of a school.”
“Not big enough.”
“Not on the right team.”

Those labels stick, but they shouldn’t.

In today’s game, the portal is recruited first. Extra eligibility exists. The path is different now. It’s not linear and it’s not the same for everyone.

As a media company, part of our job is to honor and recognize players, but we are never trying to label a kid or define their future. We’ve seen too many stories go the other way.

We love the underdog stories. We love when kids are told they are too small, not big enough, or not on the right team, and then prove people wrong.

Kansas gets labeled too. Small towns, rural, overlooked. Yet every year we see players from all over the state prove that wrong.

Our message to kids is simple. Stick with it. Good things can happen.

Development is real. Opportunity matters. And where you start doesn’t determine where you finish.
