Newton Community School District was awarded the inaugural Iowa Purple Star School designation today for their outstanding support of military-connected students. Newton received the Iowa Purple Star School designation for two schools, Berg Middle School and Newton High School. Superintendent Tom Messinger accepted the official award for the district. This could be really bad. A few Senators are refusing to sign onto an FY22 omnibus that would extend USDA's waiver authority for school meals. This would result in a $1b loss for districts and millions of kids losing access to free meals.
