Older adults who have ever been behind bars are expected to live nearly 6 fewer years than similar peers who have never been incarcerated:
We all deserve a place to call home. And yet, formerly incarcerated people are 10 times more likely than the general public to be unhoused. We must eliminate discriminatory barriers so everyone has the stable housing needed to build community and thrive.
The vast majority of people held in jail are legally innocent. Many of them are there simply because they are too poor to make bail.
