For me, twitter of the last couple years has ceased to be interactive and so there's no real incentive to post (though I still lurk). For folks w/ large audiences, Twitter has become a broadcasting platform; the rest of us are just performing for ourselves, which feels silly.

In other words we cannot map forward from an event to answer why. But we can trace back from a current phenomenon to capture at least some of the "how" of our present moment.

Historians never touch on the why. There is no ultimate end, no grand theory that explains why something occurred--"because progress" or "because declension." But we can, and should, explain how things got to be this way...if only in part.

@zeithistoriker I think Robert Johnston's work on the "radical middle class" and broader reactions to medical professionalization in the 1890s is a great place to start.
