The NG market is very large with lots of gaps. One can still play local and still be wealthy. E.g. Otedola. Give TOE his flowers

KNOW THIS BEFORE YOU PANIC: Not Every Dispute is a Police Matter.

Many people are quick to run to the police station or worse, get threatened with arrest over issues that are strictly civil in nature. The truth? The police are empowered to prevent and detect crime, not to settle personal or commercial disagreements.

Here are situations where the Nigerian Police generally have NO lawful basis to arrest you:

• LANDLORD –TENANT DISPUTES
Failure to pay rent or disagreements over tenancy terms cannot justify arrest. Eviction and tenancy enforcement must follow due legal process, except where violence or a court order is involved.

• BREACH OF CONTRACT
When a party fails to fulfill contractual obligations, the remedy lies in litigation, not arrest.

• TRESPASS WITHOUT VIOLENCE
Entering property without permission, where there is no destruction or threat, is generally a civil trespass, not grounds for arrest.

• BUSINESS & PARTNERSHIP DISPUTES
Disagreements over profit-sharing, management, or dissolution of partnerships are commercial disputes, not criminal cases

• DEBT RECOVERY & FINANCIAL OBLIGATIONS
Owing money, defaulting on a loan, or failing to complete a payment is not a crime. These are civil liabilities, not criminal offences. The police are not debt recovery agents.

• MATRIMONIAL & FAMILY DISPUTES
Issues like divorce, child custody, or spousal maintenance fall within the jurisdiction of the courts. They are domestic matters, not criminal complaints.

• DEFAMATION (Reputation Claims)
Allegations of damaged reputation are typically addressed through civil actions for damages, not criminal prosecution (except in very limited statutory circumstances).

• UNDELIVERED GOODS/SERVICES (No Fraud)
Where goods or services are paid for but not delivered, and there is no fraudulent intent, the matter remains civil.

• MORTGAGE & PROPERTY FINANCING ISSUES
Conflicts over loan repayment terms or foreclosure processes are resolved through civil proceedings.

• INHERITANCE & FAMILY PROPERTY CONFLICTS
Disputes over a deceased person’s estate belong in probate or family courts, not at the police station.

NOTE:
Don’t be intimidated or misled. Understanding the distinction between civil wrongs and criminal offences is your first line of protection.
