We have only about 50,000 doctors serving over 200 million people. That's 1 Doctor to over 4,000 patients.

You'd expect every doctor willing to serve to be encouraged.

Instead, one is detained after carrying out a menstrual hygiene outreach in Kaduna State.

Another 238 young doctors who returned home to practise wake up to an unexplained increase in their induction fees from ₦265,000 to over ₦415,000.

We cannot keep discouraging the very people we desperately need.

Her name is Gina Martin. She was at a music festival in London when a man pushed his phone between her legs and took a photo under her skirt. She reported it to the police immediately. They told her it wasn't a criminal offence. There was nothing they could do.
She went home and decided that was unacceptable. With no legal background, no political connections and no funding she launched a campaign to make upskirting a criminal offence in England and Wales. She petitioned. She lobbied MPs. She spoke publicly about what had happened to her. The government initially blocked the bill.
She kept going. The Voyeurism Act passed in January 2019. Upskirting now carries up to two years in prison. Scotland followed. Other countries are following. A woman at a festival with no lawyer, no funding and no political connections rewrote the law for an entire nation in eighteen months.

Destigmatizing Mental Health

So I took a friend who had a breakdown lately to the psychiatry hospital in Yaba Lagos.

They saw a consultant, registration was 7k & the session was like 2+hrs, it was very extensive & helpful

She got diagnosed & she had an encouraging conversation with the social workers, they even made her laugh!

She was scheduled for tests, therapy sessions & an appointment with a professional. She was also given prescribed affordable drugs!

They also took her number and that of her family members + closest friends, they spoke to the family member & friend. They promised to routinely check up on her, including house visits if needed!

If you are having low mental health, I encourage you to go to the psychiatry hospital in Yaba, it is worth a try. Nigerians suffer a lot from poor access to mental health care.

I am sharing this story to help destigmatize mental health & illnesses. I will also keep sharing updates on my friend's progress!
