Used to be a fan of @CorridorDigital but this is disheartening. Democratized?! I never went to animation school & I'm on my second solo feature film. You truly only need paper and pencil to make it happen... I started without paper animating stick figures in my school text book!

When retopoing a character, it's helpful to add some specific loops early on. This helps you fully control the topology and makes it easier to get good deformation.
