I think you’ve identified a real cultural problem, but your analysis seems focused more on individual mindsets and behavior than on the deeper historical forces that created this culture in the first place.

I would argue that the problem goes far beyond how women approach casual sex. We need to look at the historical shifts of the past century, particularly how movements that promised to liberate and empower women also helped create conditions in which women could be increasingly objectified and sexually exploited, often under the banner of empowerment.

That doesn’t mean women’s rights or greater opportunities were inherently harmful. Rather, we should question whether every change promoted as liberation has actually served women’s long-term interests.

If we look back roughly 100 years, traditional gender roles, marriage, and the nuclear family provided a social framework that placed greater emphasis on commitment, responsibility, and family formation. Those arrangements certainly had their shortcomings, but they also offered forms of stability and social accountability that today’s hookup culture often lacks.

My point is that we can’t fully understand or solve this problem simply by encouraging women to change their mindset about sex. We have to examine how we moved from a culture that emphasized marriage and family to one that increasingly treats sexual freedom as empowerment, even when the benefits are unevenly distributed and women may bear greater emotional and social costs.

The deeper question is whether what we’ve been calling progress has, in some respects, made women more vulnerable to the very exploitation it was supposed to free them from. @ryangrim @esaagar @megynkelly
