Before the summits descended into the clouds today, our night observer was able to capture a faint rainbow illuminated over station this morning, as the sun briefly peaked out through low-level clouds and freezing rain.
@walktothecabin I did a loop in the Presidential Range— up Ammonoosuc Trail (which had multiple waterfalls), summited Mt Monroe, then traversed a contour just below summit of Mt Washington on Westside Trail before I descended Jewell Trail. The weather cooperated nicely. A great day!
One of the best parts of spring on the higher summits is watching patches of green gradually creep up from the valleys and notches towards the peaks! Pictured here is an early season @cograilway train making its way past Mount Clay and towards the summit.
Summit interns Kathryn Hawkes, Athena Hendrick, & Alek Libby got to enjoy playing around in the hurricane force winds at sunset tonight, knowing that with summer just around the corner, winds like this are fewer and farther between, but sunsets like this are just getting started!

Looking towards the Northern Presidentials this morning during sunrise, with a glimpse of the warm glow on the horizon under the low-level cloud deck. A wintry mix of precipitation is forecasted for tomorrow (Wednesday) over the higher terrain.
Happy Mother's Day from the summit! 🌸 Our night observer shared this sunset with her mom, and wanted to share with all the moms out there! Captured is a timelapse of tonight's sunset looking to the west as a cold front approached the White Mountains.
Winter is not yet over for the higher summits of the Whites. Pictured here at sunset this evening looking to the summit sign, with the summit picking up 1.6" of snow in the past 48 hours. Additional snow and wintry precipitation are expected this weekend over the higher terrain.
The Mount Washington summit has experienced quite a wintry start to May, with 4.7" recorded since the start of the month, which has led to snowdrifts building back up along the side of the Yankee Building.
