Data centers should pay their fair share—not get a free ride off North Carolina taxpayers. My amendment today would have closed tax loopholes and banned state incentives for data centers. The decision to kill it puts data center profits over lowering costs for our state’s people.

We must do everything we can to ensure they are able to do this vital work safely without fear, including by making sure law enforcement have the resources they need.

My thoughts and prayers are with the victims and their families in the wake of today’s senseless shooting at the old Wake County Courthouse here in Raleigh. I’m grateful to law enforcement & first responders who quickly responded & stopped this tragedy from endangering others.

Every day, professionals from law enforcement to attorneys, judges, & court officials, to social workers & other essential workers quietly strive to ensure our justice system functions while working with people in some of the most difficult moments of their lives.

Less competition often means increased costs. This deal should be carefully reviewed to ensure it does not increase patient costs or reduce quality care.

The attorney general should also have more tools to review hospital mergers to protect NC consumers, as @NCHouseDems propose.

What a total farce. This sham settlement violates the first thing we tell every lawmaker: Fixing prices based on public data sets is still price fixing!

No ban on auto-accepts. No data disgorgement or monetary penalty.

DOJ’s settlement with RealPage fails working families struggling with the cost of housing. The settlement does nothing to stop RealPage from automatically fixing rent prices using public datasets.

That’s still price fixing.

Here in NC, I introduced HB 970, which, in addition to prohibiting algorithmic pricing using nonpublic data, also makes clear that recommending rent prices to a set of competitors in the rental market using public datasets is still price fixing.

Governor Josh Stein, the NC Museum of Sciences and NC State University announced the discovery of a new tyrannosaur species called Nanotyrannus.

From the news release:

Paleontologists in the N.C. Museum of Natural Sciences’ SECU DinoLab — the world’s only paleontology preparation lab regularly open to the public — have been studying the pair of exquisitely preserved, 67-million-year-old specimens called the “Dueling Dinosaurs” after the museum acquired them in 2020. Now, the lab’s first major research finding is being announced to the public, overturning a widely accepted scientific consensus on tyrannosaurs that had persisted for more than three decades.

The Dueling Dinosaurs fossil contains two dinosaurs preserved together in a potential predator-prey encounter: a Triceratopsand what was originally thought to be a juvenile tyrannosaur. They were found buried together in the Hell Creek Formation of Montana. That tyrannosaur is now confirmed to be a fully grown Nanotyrannus lancensis – not a teenage Tyrannosaurus rex, as many scientists once believed.

I thank @NC_Governor for signing Iryna’s Law, which will help prevent violence and keep people safe. This is a start, but we must do more to stop violent crime and ensure safety, like funding mental health care. I’ll work with Gov. Stein and NCGA colleagues to make it happen.

This morning, on the 24th anniversary of September 11th, I joined the @NCNationalGuard to remember that day and the guardsmen who gave their lives since. As Pericles said, “Freedom is the sure possession of those alone who have the courage to defend it.” We will never forget.
