"Athlete monitoring perspectives of sports coaches and support staff: A scoping review" https://t.co/YxPvvdvAao More about this and related topics during the upcoming @STRN_SportsTech Summit in September!
@DrSianAllen@YLMSportScience, this content might potentially be suitable for an infographic. If it would be deemed suitable, I'm definitely keen to assist.
The more things we monitor, the more value we get... right?
Conclusions from this review of how Sport Scientists & Coaches perceive athlete monitoring:
"While athlete monitoring has generally been seen as valuable, coaches and support staff tended to expect the effectiveness to be higher"
Proposed reasons for this gap:
๐น A lack of time, expertise, and resources
๐น Having to obtain athlete buy-in, adherence and compliance
๐น Ensuring valid and reliable data collection and accurate interpretation
๐น Over-hyped marketing claims of athlete monitoring technologies
๐น Over-simplification of the relationships between monitoring variables and sports performance / injury
From my experience, this scoping review is significant to support the importance of perceiving players as human-individuals (not machines) "athlete monitoring extends beyond quantitative information and encompasses non-quantified subjective information" https://t.co/0uV45kScon
โก Central role of coaches and support staff: Amidst the rise of AI coaches and support staff will continue to have a central role within collecting, analysing and interpreting athlete monitoring data and information
We have two PhD positions available at the University of Bologna (Italy) starting the 1st of November 2023. One is "The use of wireless dynamometers to support resistance training and strength assessment in different populations" in collaboration with Kinvent,
@andykirkland71 Iโm not advocating to just mindlessly collecting everything and anything but to challenge the idea that data should be immediately applicable.
@andykirkland71 It depends, but not all data needs to be applicable immediately. Some data is only useful over time and for other data our processing methods or understanding is not good enough (yet?). But having that longitudinal data will be valuable whenever our understanding gets there
Thanks to my supervisors @a_araynor @stanley_mandy @AbbissC@NathanGLawler for their expertise and support and @EdithCowanUni@MHS_ECU
Also a massive thanks to the world-class coaches who generously gave me their time and shared their perspectives
Already a week ago since I presented part of my PhD research on world-class endurance sports coaching at @E_C_S_S Paris and almost a month at @CRiC_SCR Liverpool
Great to catch up with friends and meet new people
