So good to be back in Ashburn for a football practice. A few observations.

1) The WR competition feels wide open. After McLaurin it feels like several guys are going to get a shot to earn touches.

2) I’ve long been enamored with big WRs and I find myself excited about Treylon Burks. I like how he uses his size and he made a couple extremely athletic catches while working with the first team today. His best moment of the day was an acrobatic TD snag in the corner of the endzone.

3) Speaking of WRs, I can see what AP loved about Antonio Williams as a route runner. He’s smooth and technical. Great footwork.

4) The Commanders defense is faster and you could even feel that speed without pads in today’s session. It felt like that speed really helped clog things up and shrink problem areas in goal line and RZ periods.

5) WSH’s defensive line is huge. I wonder if this is just a league wide observation about how big everybody is getting in this era, but the size stands out. It makes sense too. They need to stop the run to get into the passing downs that allow them to get exotic. The size should help.

6) If WSH doesn’t add a veteran WR, I feel like Dyami Brown will have a bigger role than people think.

7) I get so steamed up for under center QB play and pre- snap motions and shifts. This is another way of me saying I’m a big David Blough guy.

8) Sounds like the TE room is in good hands with Wes Welker. I’m a little surprised he doesn’t get a new title but between he and Raih I think the room will be fine moving forward after the firing of Ben Steele.

9) Tyler Owens is going to be an important player on teams. He’s big, fast and physical. Owens said he was surprised and sad to hear about Nick Bellore retiring. The Commanders have been great in coverage under Larry Izzo. If that’s going to continue without Bellore, they’ll need to find a similarly motivated coverage ace.

10) Tackling Kaytron Allen is going to be about as fun as cleaning up a torn open trash bag in 100 degree heat. He’s a big body and he doesn’t shy away from contact.

Richard Pitino's group is looking sneaky good. If this ends up being their final roster, it would be around a top-25 squad in a typical year.
