Let’s all keep in mind: Canada did not force economic integration upon the US. The fusion of the two countries’ auto sectors started the process in the 1960s and was the product of a mutual decision by Ottawa and Washington to create the Auto Pact. The process accelerated in the 1980s and 1990s, involving three presidents, two Republicans and one Democrat, and multiple prime ministers.

Threaded through the second Trump administration’s assault on the Canadian economy and Canadian sovereignty is the fact that President Trump just can’t get over that Prime Minister Mark Carney won’t kiss the ring. From Putin and Kim that behavior earns his respect, from an upstanding, smart, democratic ally it breeds resentment and a desire for revenge. Who’s the nasty one, Mr. President?
