"For the consumer it is a case of higher costs, less choice and fewer merchants competing for their business" @timocurtis on @BBCr4today on the @RishiSunak reforms of alcohol duty that will lead to more red tape and 80% of bottles going up in price. #wine#fairerwinetax
The UK wine trade is aligned on this: make the wine duty easement permanent. Allowing it to end on 01/02/2025 would introduce significant additional administration and cost - both inhibitors to growth

A lot to talk about @londonwinefair today:
- wine duty

🚨 HMRC’s latest data shows excise duty receipts for wine & spirits were down £436m for @hmtreasury between Sept & Jan compared to 2022/23.
Add to that, losses from beer & cider, Treasury coffers are down almost £600m 📉

Now's the time to write to your MP and tell them how losing the temporary easement for wine duty will affect your business - letter template link here @DanielLambert29 @wstauk https://t.co/ehJyYoHdGu
Essential long read ahead of the new wine duty rates coming in on 1st August:
🔴 20% duty increase for most still wines
🔴 44% duty increase for fortified wines
🔴 More complexity for wine businesses
Great 🧵@GavinQuinney#wine#duty#FairerDrinksTax

It’s not ‘much simpler’ so here’s
A guide to the UK duty hikes on wine
A very long🧵

Honoured to give feedback to the Wine & Spirits APPG from @DirectWines1969 on the Spring Budget & to answer questions from engaged MPs
The largest wine duty increase in 5 decades is:
❌ inflationary
❌ distortive
❌ a brutal cost increase for the UK’s SME-rich #wine trade
@WSTA_Miles with new chair of the Wine and Spirits APPG, @grahambradymp
Also chair of the Conservative Party's 1922 committee, Sir Graham was elected as APPG chair at Tuesday’s AGM in Parliament, which also included briefing MPs on duty increases announced in the Spring Budget
