Fired after 8 months. Zero placements.
I'm 45 now. Used cars, then consulting, then recruiting. I fell into recruiting by accident, and my first employer let me go before I'd placed a single person.
A small agency took me on. I became its top producer, then built my own firm. 10+ years in sales since.
It took me from not knowing what to do with my life to working with clients, candidates and rooms I never expected to be in.
I paid more than I made along the way. Rectifying that.
I write for guys who don't know what to do with their life. My answer: start in sales. It's the best school I know for people, money and yourself, and it opens more doors than most degrees.
Still fighting my demons. I haven't won, but I've identified most of them.
Berlin. DM me.
Before a hard call:
- Write the one question you need answered.
- Write the worst thing they could say.
- Decide your reply to it.
Two minutes of prep.
18 and unsure? Don't pick a career. Pick a skill.
Start with the one that works in every industry: talking to people and asking for the next step.

People don't know what they want until you show it to them. But they always know what's bugging them.
In Sales, that's your whole pitch. Skip the feature list. Ask "What's annoying you most right now?", then stay quiet and listen.
They'll write your pitch for you.
Steve Jobs:
"People don't know what they want until you show it to them."
(True. But they know exactly what's bugging them, and they've already written it in your 3-star reviews.)
@randomrecruiter 10+ years of recruiting, and the roles that go fast rarely make it to a job board. They get filled off a phone call before anyone writes the ad. If you only watch boards, you're already a week late.
@alxberman Split roles also tell you where it breaks: the list, the message or the close. When one person does everything, you only know the month was bad.
@thejustinwelsh The open calendar comes last. First you fill it with the calls nobody wants to make, and that leads to it being more open in the future.
