I'm preaching on Gideon from Judges 6-8 at my church on Sunday. One takeaway I've had during a week in this text: Never meet your heroes—they'll disappoint. Also, meet your heroes—they'll remind you that no human is competent to place our hopes on.

The older I get, the more important it is to set the decrepitude of humanity against the perfections of Christ—that no "hero" or "man of valor" is immune from the decaying effects of sin. And yet, "in our place condemned he stood."
