@Tych011@sixteenpoundham@ConceptualJames I’m actually working on a similar project at northwestern. I think both methods are important. I also think it’s worth noting that northwestern does more than affirmative action measures. They provide a lot of social resources to women and minorities, that goes beyond aesthetic.
@Tych011@sixteenpoundham@ConceptualJames Yeah certain struggles make it more difficult to produce the numbers colleges want. It is harder to take an AP class if your school doesn’t offer it. It is harder to get a high SAT score if your parents can’t afford tutoring. These issues disproportionately affect minorities.
@Tych011@sixteenpoundham@ConceptualJames Again you imply that students who are accepted via affirmative action measures are inherently lower quality when that quality rating is blind of the conditions they were raised under. I don’t want to live in a country where only rich idiots get to go to college.
@Tych011@sixteenpoundham@ConceptualJames Again ur doing that thing where you just say something’s happening. In reality it makes sense to consider the amount of adversity someone had to face relative to their success. Someone who has a lower SAT score can be higher quality than some guy who had everything handed to him.
@Tych011@sixteenpoundham@ConceptualJames But that’s still not what’s happening and you know that. The people who are getting rejected have lower stats than that. You’re being disingenuous again. The person who struggled and still performed well will be accepted over the person who had those conditions and still had 4.1.
@sixteenpoundham@Tych011@ConceptualJames Bro thinks he’s part of the convo, I’m begging u to find another argument to butt into. You don’t know what’s going on and ur tweets are separate and don’t make sense. We don’t want ur input 💀💀
@Tych011@sixteenpoundham@ConceptualJames An overrepresented group doesn’t go to his dream school he goes to the second best one he can still afford while the black lesbian girl who grew up in the slums with no access to tutoring or APs gets to go to college as a result of her effort.
@Tych011@sixteenpoundham@ConceptualJames Pretending like India kid would ever get rejected is disingenuous and ridiculous. This scenario you completely made up is especially cool because you discredit the struggles that the black lesbian who lives in the slums encounters. The real situation is that a affluent kid from
@Tych011@sixteenpoundham@ConceptualJames Those groups are overrepresented and there are groups who are underrepresented. These trends are easily linked to socioeconomic conditions. Implementing these changes now, ensures that everyone has equal opportunity in the future.
@sixteenpoundham@Tych011@ConceptualJames But there’s a little bit of nuance here. If you base quality on a standard that is flawed, you will miss out on true quality candidates. You’re also not really restricting the candidate pool, it’s expanding into other groups while only taking the highest quality of each group.
