@dalechris@MPLandscapes Arbitrary rules like this don't do anybody any favours. There may be some merit if you're trying to infer the photographer's skill and one image is not cropped and another is cropped to a quarter of its original size. The non-cropped image *may* imply poor craft (but not always)
@mikecurryphotos @wmdore_images@MPLandscapes Yes, but only after the fact - the waves (it's a coastal one) were exploding in different places and he was pretty near to the end range on his zoom tele. He backed the zoom off a bit to ensure he didn't miss anything but the wave he wanted needed more than the full reach anyway
@wmdore_images@MPLandscapes I should also add that the Wildlife Photographer of the Year used to have rules around cropping which we discussed at length and agreed to drop in the end. Especially in wildlife, the chances of you having the perfect telephoto prime is slim.
@wmdore_images@MPLandscapes However, like Mike says, there are so many valid reasons for it that we ended up awarding the image first place in a category...
@mammuthus @jamesewer In which case it's more of a case of 1) there aren't many people of Brian and Alex's standards submitting UK work and 2) If there are any close, they aren't submitting their work (or their best work)
@mammuthus @jamesewer OK - can you point out some a few images (enough for me to recognise a different aesthetic) that don't fit the aesthetic you have identified and that should have done well in the competition?
@mammuthus @jamesewer I'm not implying that at all (although its a possibility). I'm just interested in what work you think should have done well that fits the "UK aesthetic" so I can have an idea what "UK aesthetic" means (difficult to know without a reference)
@mammuthus @jamesewer I built Joe's website for him so just had a look through and I could easily build an entry set that would have surely had him in the finalists. I'm seriously interested in what sort of photographs are UK centric that you think would have done well that we aren't seeing?
@RoamMtns I presume you were near the top of number three? Hoping to get on the NF later this winter... Have you been up No3 GB? I didn't realise it went at III. Looks entertaining!
