My trip to the forests of Southern Normandy and the Eure was rounded off yesterday by a fleeting glimpse of a Crested Tit flitting around high in one of the tall pines in the garden.
Merlin bird app Id has been pretty good for me, but I only report spots rather than sound ids. Given that, I am getting better at recognising song through the app. Green and Greater spotted woodpeckers definitely heard. Black and Middle Spotted via Merlin this week - possible!
Today short perimeter of the forest walk didnโt show much - glimpse of a hawfinch in flight, two crows mobbing a buzzard, a blackcap singing nearby + a young family of 6/7 swallows sweeping the crops for insects. Best spot though was a melodious warbler thru the kitchen window!!
Pleased to see a family of short toed tree creepers, 5-6 hawfinches in flight and one sitting proud atop a branch and a delightful little spotted flycatcher showing well, all from the confines of the cottage we have rented in lower Normandy
Lovely large Jersey Tiger Moth perusing my herb bed and cucumber plants and beans this evening. Beautiful zebra upper wing markings with vibrant orange below.
Great trip to the Cotswolds at the weekend. Buzzards aplenty and Red Kites. One RK almost fell out of tree in front of us. Pair of Red Legged Partridges on verge of the drive. Hedgerow growth lush so spotting hard. Merlin id app helped id Marsh Tit and Willow Warbler songs.
@SOSWhitstable Same most of yesterday along shoreline between Whitstable and Hampton. And still they get away with it and still thousands of new homes being built in the district. Infrastructure needs major investment BEFORE new developments started or allowed, Regulators need to get a grip.
Blustery walk along the coast today from Tankerton to Birchington. Quite a few terns battling the breeze close to shore groups of swallows and housemartins along the top. Pleased to see numbers of sandmartins along the beltinge/reculver bit. Skylarks and a first wheatear of year
Probably behind the curve here but first Swallow of the year seen skimming the slopes and two Great Crested Grebes off of the Yacht Club in breeding plumage. Lovely to see.
Surprised to see 3 sparrowhawks riding a thermal high over south Tankerton this morning with one peeling off unexpectedly to dart into the wooded copse on church street from quite a height
