“Hi Daddy Hopewell, I hope you're doing well. I'm so sorry to reach out via DM, but I desperately need your help.
My young nephew has just received his O-Level results and achieved an impressive 11 As! However, due to financial constraints, we're struggling to fund his A-Level education.
His dream is to become a doctor, and I'd love to see him achieve this goal.
Could you please connect me with anyone who might be able to offer a scholarship or sponsorship?
I'd be forever grateful for your assistance. +263 71 966 0560”

Maud Chifamba, who held the title as the youngest university student in Africa, shared her thoughts on Facebook regarding the Old Mutual story, where a 41-year-old senior manager is accused of r@ping a 23-year-old intern:
LONG LONG POST: An issue like this infuriates me; and many girls out there go through this. As a girl who received a scholarship when I was quite young, I know so many people who were victims, and the perpetrators vachizikanwa. And the comments under posts like these are the reasons noone speaks out; on top of the threats of the withdrawal of the scholarship and the drama surrounding it! If everyone was to come forward, tinoswera pano.
Now, let me set the scene for you. Unenge uriwe wekutanga kutopinda mu Harare kumba kwenyu, and the first one to go to university. Kumba kwenyu hakutorina mari ye ma basics, let alone ~$1,000 per semester inodiwa ku UZ. But then unogona chikoro, so a company like Old Mutual comes and says we will pay for you. Your family praises God and the heavens. Even iwewe, the gratitude you feel, noone really knows unless they were once stranded. Imagine with my scholarship; I used to save and send home mari yerent, kutoita family’s breadwinner.
Now Old Mutual is not a building, its made up of people, in this case, the scholarship committee. One of the people in the scholarship committee sends you a message, “huya ku event yakati yakati for this”. This is in your 3rd month at University, urimu part 1: semester 1. So You go. And he forces himself on you. And he says if you tell, noone will believe you and the committee will withdraw that scholarship. You accept your cross and keep it moving. When you go ku attachment at same company, he does it again. 2 questions:
1. Would you report it? Read paragraph 1 again and answer this question.
2. Was there consent?
Before you answer question 2 - I want to give a different scenario. Lets say when they were at the event, he said all the sweet things and actually asked her out. Akamunyenga. If you were this part 1 girl, would you say no? Given that this person is literally making it clear to you kuti he could take back scholarship then wozodii? Would you say NO?
In situations where one is vulnerable, and another holds significant power like this; you can never say vakawirirana. Musa is allowed to sleep with as many students as he wants as long as they are adults and vakamubvuma; but when he is doing it to students who are sponsored by a scholarship he is involved with in some way, it is abuse of power and he is taking advantage of a vulnerable person who cant say no to him. What he *allegedly* did is DESPICABLE and very SHAMEFUL. And for social media to come and do the “innocent till proven guilty” rhetoric, or the “let the courts handle it” comments is sad. Why are you not giving the girl the benefit of the doubt? And while courts handle the legal parts; as a society we must condemn this kind of behavior.
Its not just Old Mutual scholarship, kuiswa pa list re cadet fellowship chairo, presidential scholarship and a lot of these scholarships; I have heard horror stories - girls being abused by people who are supposed to be helping them. It is SHAMEFUL. Most of the times, its not once off, people know vanhu that engage in this behavior but still let them sit in positions where they will continue or take advantage of more people. It is really shameful!
Men with this kind of disgusting behavior should stay away from all positions that involve interactions with vulnerable people - whether ku church, ma childrens home or ma scholarship committee. Now mwana wevanhu anopedza chikoro achitaugwa UZ yese, and we know how the world is unkind to victims. Judging by these comments - yuuu.
And the other side, I feel so sorry for the wife of this man. Unofambirepi nhaimi; baba vakazara social media yose. I am very happy the media used his picture - I hope none of these corporates hire him for these MC gigs anymore.
Using this opportunity to remind you that its not all bad - some people are really good and well meaning. I want to thank my guardian angels: the people that protected me from evil men like this. Professor Nyagura and CG Pasi made sure everyone knew I was their child; and noone Inzwirashe Chenai Muwonwana InzTaungana Ndoro Muwonwa nana Taungana Ndoro were really my team. And regularly; they would checkin on me to make sure everything was going well. Bless them and I was blessed to have them!
CONSENT CAN NOT BE GIVEN WHERE THERE IS AN IMBALANCE OF POWER.
